Leo Euthanasia

nuhtty Jun 05, 2006 09:53 PM

You may remember I posted here a few weeks ago regarding a sick Leo. After several trips to the vet and a few meds it looks like both of my little guys arent going to make it. I think euthanasia is the next most appropriate step.

Does anyone know how they euthanize small reptiles? Gas, injection, dry ice, freezing?

This has been an ongoing problem for several months now.

I believe one of them came down with some sort of infection in its eye after a bad shed. Whatever it was quickly spread to the other eye and even to our other gecko before we were able to set up a quarantine tank.

Soaks, antibiotics and vitamins have all failed. Both are refusing all foods now. The one is completely blind and the other is blind in one eye.

Working with the vet we have exhausted all resources trying to help these two little guys. They lived fat and happy for over 3 years until this happened.

Here's a site that gives you information on euthanizing lizards...

I'm a longtime gecko breeder, and i believe in a good firm hit to the head with a blunt object. It is much more humane than gas. Gas leaves you with an intact carcass, but when you think about it, really they are dying a more painful death. A one hit blow with a hammer may seem cruel, but it kills them instantly. Gas is a selfish way to euthanise any anmial. it comforts your head, leaving you with a perfectly normal corpse but they are dying a horrible death. Be a man and give the lizard the painless and quick death it deserves, not the peace of mind you need.
