outdoor enclosure

savannahblue Jun 05, 2006 10:00 PM

i wanna build an outdoor enclosure for my savannah monitor. i wanna build a large enclosure and would have more space outside. i live in FL so the temps are hot enough, ive measured outdoor temps on many surfaces. it does rain here often during the summer though. does anyone have any reasons why an outdoor enclosure would be a bad or good choice? i read somethings about too much natural sunlight and too much out door action (birds etc) making lizards a lil more paranoid and a lil more agressive. what do you guys think? thanks!

Well, I can help you by telling you how I set up my enclosure but you will have to make the descisions yourself. My outdoor is 13x7.5x6 and was based around a dog kennel. Frist I dug a foundation and layed out marine 4x4 around the perimeter. Then I attached the dog kennels bottom to the wood. Then I built a wooden frame and top to rest on the kennel. Then the rest was covered with chicken wire to keep the lizards from escaping. The chain link on the kennel keeps racoons and other predators out. Then on the inside I am taking fiberglass sheeting that is about 3ft tall and putting it around the perimeter. This gives them a sense of security and stops any nose rubbing. Also make sure to throw in plenty of dirt. Oh and as for the bottom to prevent escape by digging, I bought those square stepping stones about1.5 inches thick and covered the whole bottom. They are fit snugly and pounded in so the monitors can't lift them. So there are many ways to build a cage, I had to build a top because of the racoons, but other lucky people who do not have the problem can have open top enclosures. Just use the feedback to create what works best for you and your monitors. Keep the lizards interest at mind and give it ample room and dirt..I am guessing it is for a savanah. Thanks
