slider laid eggs in water!

mistyturtle Jun 06, 2006 08:15 AM

Hello all, I was unaware that my slider was even around a male, let alone ready to lay eggs, therefore I didnot put her in a suitable area to lay them! She laid them in her normal setup, which has no substrate at all (as she eats it.) Are these egss still viable? should i remove them from the water and try to incubate them? I am very confused as to what has happened, and feel so bad for my turtle! Pease help me out!

First off if the eggs have been underwater for too long a period they will not be viable. You pretty much have to get them out right after they are laid.

Secondly -- they may not have been fertile in the first place. Turtles are quite capable of laying eggs with out ever having had contact with a male. Naturally the eggs are infertile but they do not have to mate in order to lay eggs.

Hopes this helps.

Steve
