Yearling weight question

NsM Jun 06, 2006 01:10 PM

Hey guys,

I was wondering, what would you consider to be a normal wieght for a yearling honduran?
By yearling I mean from last year (05').

I have 5, 05' animals (bought from Marc.B) that are doing quite well, but I would really like to hear your thoughts.

Here is one of them,

Hey Nevo,

There really is no "standard" weight size for yearlings. What you should do is continue upgrading the size of the pinky you feed it to until it reaches a point that you start feeding it with "rat pups" or a "juvenile" mouse (juvenile means that it just recently got weaned). Then when you start feeding it with rat pups or juvenile mice, you will see a spike or a spurt in growth. When that happens, I would feed 2 or 3 pieces per meal of those rat pups or juveniles every 5-6 days (except of course during shedding phase) until you are able to feed it full grown mouse. Several of my 04 hatchlings had this kind of feeding schedule and they are all have reached over 500 grams in 18 months.

Remember also that a key element is a hiding place where an underneath heating pad is in place so that the digestion process can speed up a bit faster than normal.

Hope you are doing well with your hatchlings.

P.S. I sent you an email directly (separately) btw on another subject.

Thanks for the answers Ray.

500g at 18 month of age it's crazy, great job sir.
Do you have weight of any 05' babies? (if i remember correctly you bought a snow and an extreme this season)

I replied to the email .
The hondo's at my place weight at the moment (9 month of age), between 40-85 grams. does that sound right to you?

I sent you a long email directly to elaborate more about this subject but in summary, you are doing well with yours if it is eating regularly. If you are trying to make it big enough to breed next year, a feeding of every 4-5 days (instead of 5-6 days) would be ideal and feeding it as much as it can take.

HOWEVER, if it takes or eats way too much, you run the risk of the snake regurgitating or vomiting its food...and when that happens, it usually will stop eating for 2 weeks or even more...and that will just set you back a little bit if it keeps doing that. Just make sure that when you feed it, do not disturb it for at least two days and make sure that the hiding place is warm enough to digest its food.

later...

I also have a honduran from Marc B.

The snake, a male, was born Sept 29, 2004.
On Nov 4, 2005 it weighed 150g and was 32.5" long.
As of May 19, 2006 it weiged 404g and was over 40" long.
He's blue right now, and I'll take another weight and length measurement after he sheds.
I've been feeding him once a week since I got him, and he's taking large adult mice now.

Here's Magma!

Hey Nevo,

They are looking good, Ray gave you the exact recipe for optimal growth, I find they put on size as soon as I get them going on rat pups, your two bigger girls have the size for rat pups now...

Breeding a female at 12-18 months is not an option in my book, the risk of loosing a female to egg binding is just not worth getting a small clutch over, I much prefer big double digit egg clutches, but thats just me...

Keep up the good work my Friend!

All the replies are highly appreciated.

Marc, Thanks again for the snakes, and the effort you invested sending those snakes over sea

I Can't be more happy with them.

I'll try increase a little bit the size of the food items, and number of items given for each meal.

Thanks again everyone for your time,
Nevo.S
