Mystery Roach

joeysgreen Jun 06, 2006 05:55 PM

These were sold to me as african burrowing cockroaches. They've done best in the cooler basement, and are always hiding in their compost substrate, rarely comming to the surface. They are about the size of a cricket, really fast, non-flyers, but very good climbers.

Also in the picture on the left is a different looking specimen. Is this a loan adult or a different species that was mixed in? It is much slower and perhaps not quite as good at climbing.

Thanks, Ian

Ian,

Those are Pycnoscelus surinamensis. Surinam roach. The one on the left is an adult, the others are nymphs at various instar stages.
