I ski, and play bass. I also really like mechanical stuff, mostly cars, but in an apartment with no garage thats a tough hobby to keep up!

cheers

I enjoy life in general! My hobbies and interest include my family, church, hunting, fishing, and I've been knwon to put my truck in four-wheel drive a time or two.

Here is a pic of some of the most memorable hunts I've had.....
All were taken in AL on our family farm........

A few bluegill from this spring...and my wife.

vichris Jun 07, 2006 11:52 AM

You sound alot like me Matt. I may have to take a trip to Alabama.

I don't really consider my wife, kids, and church a hobby but I do spend more time doin stuff with them than my hobbies. That being said I have too many hobbies.

I'll put them in the order of time spent on the activity. Archery, working out at the gym, Fly fishing, Hunting in general, Motorcycle riding and wrenching, Astronomy, Gun sports (mostly skeet).
I have a general interest in optics also. I was an Optician in my teens and twentys and went on to join the Navy and became a "Opticalman". I've got telescopes, microscopes, cameras and lenses, binoculars, spotting scopes and numerous other optics I like to play with.

Like I said too many hobbies. At least I won't be bored when I retire. LOL

Vichris, nice choice of trucks! I also drive a Chevy ext-cab Z-71. Great ride!

Nice looking elk too!

vichris Jun 07, 2006 05:43 PM

Thanks Matt.

How old is your truck? Mine is a 1995. I don't put alot of miles on mine especially this time of year. I ride my bike (motorcycle) to and from work and any time I'm not carrying kids or other stuff I can't carry on the bike. I have a 23 year old son and he and I do most of the wrenching on the truck. He's a mechanic by trade.

BTW those are all nice bucks you bagged especially that one on the lower right. Are you a Primos fan?

Oh and the elk..........that's the little one.

Vicjris, my truck is a '98. The last model with the Vortec 350.

It holds some sentimental value for the family because it was the ONLY new truck my Dad has ever owned. Before his mother died she told him that she wanted to see him in a brand new truck, and to go buy whatever he wanted. SO he did, and now I am driving it because he needed something more powerful to haul equipment(so he bought a used 2500 HD). He wants it to stay in the family. I take REALLY good care of it. It has 98,000 k miles and still looks like it just rolled off the lot. I figured I would keep it as nice as possible. I consider myself blessed to have it.

Thanks for the kind words on the bucks! It pays off to be persistent. Especially here in the south where large bucks are VERY hard to come by. And yeah I watch a Primos video every now-and-then.

If you ever come through Bama on the bike drop me a line.

mattbrock Jun 07, 2006 08:45 PM

I wanna see that BIG one.

That buck to lower right grossed 148 and 5/8". He's my best so far. He had a 18 and 1/2" inside spread with 25" main beams. You should have seen the excitment in my eyes when I walked up on him on the ground. He was actually larger than I gave him credit for...lol. It was a thrill!

Vichris Jun 07, 2006 10:27 PM

Don't try to understand IT.

Just understand this.

EVERY living thing kills or lives off of other living things in order to sustain itself.

Wheather its bacteria, paramecium, crickets, mice, rats, fish, rabbits, chickens, goats, cows, elk, deer..... or humans. It's the circle of life. They made a cartoon about it to help us all understand it better. But there are much better places you can look to understand it even more.

I savor the hunt, eat the meat, tan the hide, admire the antlers, and wander........wonder.

Ask yourself....... do you know what it is to LIVE.

BTW this wasn't ment as a rant or or to make waves either.

I have come to realize in my very short 22 year old lifespan that the majority of our society is dependant on Wal-Mart, and doesn't know what it is like to enjoy working(and hunting) for your food.

This is not your fault, but you need to live 12 months in the home of a family that still cuts firewood to put in the furnace to keep them warm over winter, and has a small summer garden for fresh vegetables, and uses the animals on the land for their annual food source, and drinks well water, and puts up fences made from cut down cedar trees, and enjoys the very basics of living in an environment that still offers the luxury and enjoyment of a simple life. Hunting is an absolute enjoyment, and it would probably be impossible for you to understand the sense of accomplishment one feels when they have successfully outwitted one of the most cunning creatures on earth. We not only admire the mounts on the wall, but we enjoy every savory bite of a juicy tenderloin wrapped in bacon and Dale's steak seasoning on our grill. Awesome? Yes it is.

guttersnacks Jun 07, 2006 11:07 PM

"Hunting is an absolute enjoyment, and it would probably be impossible for you to understand the sense of accomplishment one feels when they have successfully outwitted one of the most cunning creatures on earth"

Thats exactly right. I dont understand the THRILL of the kill.
Thats all Im saying folks, plain and simple.

mattbrock Jun 07, 2006 11:11 PM

I don't hold that against you.

Vichris Jun 07, 2006 11:17 PM

Because there is no thrill in killing. The thrill is in the HUNT. And hunting is way way way more then killing. I'd even have to say that there is some sadness in the fact that a living creature is dying so that I can live.......and enjoy life.

Killing is the culmination of the hunt.

Not that anyone asked for my input, but I have enjoyed following this thread and offer my thoughts.

I don't have a great desire or thrill to kill creatures, no matter how elusive, if I did, I would have gotten pissed off when I hit a deer with my truck, I would have rejoiced in my acomplishment. After I kill a deer, I actually say a prayer for that animal and myself and thank God for both the meat it has provide to me, plus I thank God for it's life and all that it has provided in (here comes the really corny catch phrase) in the Circle of Life. Ig=f I just had a great desire to kill an animal for killing, hell I would be a farmer, then I wouldn't sit in a tree with my butt cheeks burning from numbness, hoping like hell that mosquitoe doesn't bite the top of my hand where he just landed, I would just go out into the field, shot a cow and call it a good day.

Just my thoughts

Upscale Jun 09, 2006 09:27 PM

I wanted to second the “not into killing things” opinion. I use to hunt for fun, it’s basically target practice on live animals. Killing can never compare to the challenge and skill of capturing things alive and unharmed. An adult should eventually see the senselessness of it. How would you feel about snake hunting and mounting the skins for trophies? How is that different than displaying skull parts and stuffed severed heads? I have no interest in imposing my opinion on your hobby; I guess I really just don’t get it. Seems mental, but hey, have fun and try not to shoot your buddy in the face.

BTW this wasn't meant as a rant or to make waves either

Vichris Jun 07, 2006 10:41 PM

Matt I've got pics posted on my website in the gallery under "these are a few of my favorite things".

If I ever get back through Bama I definately won't be coming on my bike. I can't carry archery equipment and such on the bike. And the same goes for you. Let me know if you ever have plans to come out to New Mexico.

It's funny too about your truck and the family attachment. My truck too has story to tell about family. Unfortunately it's more of a tragic story. Some other time.

Cool. I still like to hunt and fish. In fact it was the outdoors that got me into doing taxidermy. I first started doing taxidermy in 1974 (no old jokes please LOL). Below is a link to some of my taxidermy over the years. I haven't done client work since the late 1990's but I still compete every now and then.

The picture is of an Arizona Black Rattlesnake (skin mount) that I did in 1997 for the Arizona Taxidermy Artists Association.

And here is the link for more of my taxidermy pics.

Kerby, you know being outside with my father hunting is what got me interested in herps. We were always hunting and fishing, even when I was really young. He took a lot of time to teach me respect for all wildlife, and he made sure I could identify every living thing(plant and animal) around our neck of the woods....lol. Including snakes. That is how I ended up where I am today.

Those are some awesome shots of fish and stuff. Looks like fun!

Songwriter, guitar, fiddling with Java and html for web design, and work, work, work on some awesome superyachts here in south Florida. I am 46, married, two boys age 13 and 15. Also enjoy slowly killing some exotic plants like big lobster claw heliconias.

Equipment:
Kramer Ripley Stereo Guitar (pan pot for each string- Eddie Van Halen’s “1984” type. Serial number 0049 supposedly EVH set up the first 50?)
Gibson electric/acoustic J160E (Like Beatles “Help” guitars, just like the one stolen from John Lennon at the Fountainbleau Hotel here hhhmmmm....)

That old pedal was very awesome (if you like Randy Rhodes sounds!) I should break it out and see if it still works, even. Thanks to my neighbors, I think I blew my hearing playing into a Rockman with headphones w. volume control I could turn way up past the Rockman phones. What? What did you say? Turnip? I’m like a snake now, I just respond to vibrations.

guttersnacks Jun 07, 2006 10:30 PM

Yea, you should break it out and send it to me, I need one. Hehehe.
Rockman. Tom Scholz made some cool stuff. I was a big fan of the guitar tones on the Def Leppard album Hysteria, and then I found out it was mostly all Rockman stuff. Wow.
I got to see Boston in concert a few years ago in Virginia Beach. It was an INCREDIBLE show. Sounded JUST like the album.

Hey I saw Boston way back in 1979 or something when they were “the new Zeppelin”. I remember it was just like the album too! I was pretty wasted, though. Which was a major hobby at the time but I would not bring that up here...
I really dug Badlands (Jake E. Lee’s band), man I could be their singer tomorrow. I loved that stuff and some of those guitar tones from the 80’s like solo on “I’ll Remember You” Skid Row song. Loved “Ballad of Jayne” by L.A.Guns, Tesla, Great White, even that C.C. DeVille in Poison, man I thought that guy had great character in his playing. Highly underrated, I appreciate great fingers. Now my kid is into Greenday, and I think that stuff is pretty good, I like it. Now they are selling some “Hair Band Ballads” collection on TV, it is my old record collection! I tabbed all those songs! My kids think it sucks!

guttersnacks Jun 08, 2006 05:51 PM

Right on. Are you familiar with the long acoustic intro to the Tesla song "Love Song" ? It's a real pretty acoustic arrangement if you're not familiar with it. Anyway, when I got married, THATS the song my wife came down the aisle to(well, between the fold-up chairs at the beach anyway, not much of a "Aisle" so to speak), rather than the traditional march. The music stopped when the electric stuff kicked in.
Then we left to the beginning of Steve Vai's "Liberty" The first track on the Passion and Warfare album, a very stand-upish song. I'm a HUGE Steve fan. He says he actually took the chord progressions from the national anthem and just rearranged them to write that song.
I was never a big fan of Poison or CC's playing, Im into more of the technical guys like Vai, Satriani, and John Petrucci from Dream Theater and Paul Gilbert. Not Yngwie though, he's too much of a snob for me to support.
Slash of course is well know to have some connections in the reptile community since he was adopting unwanted boas and pythons in his neighborhood.
Anyway, Im rambling now........
Im selling my Mesa 50/50 power amp on ebay if you're shopping for any gear heeheheee

"The more people I meet, the more I like my snakes"

Upscale Jun 08, 2006 09:47 PM

I figured you were into Vai with that seven string guitar. Paul Gilbert from Racer X? I knew that band before most people. The whole GIT line up, Reb Beach, Steve Lynch, Jason Becker, Vito Bratta, John Sykes, etc. I was a fan of certain players (and tones) more than the groups. That Tesla thing is a lot like Randy Rhodes’ “Dee”. I saw all those guys play. I saw Vai and Sheehan play w DLR. The super technical stuff is more for guitar fans than songwriting. Next time somebody says to you “play something,” just do that opening of “Lonely is the night” and everybody thinks you can play great. I really like cool sounding simple riffs like that. I better, because I sure can’t play like Vai. I can fake it real good though!

guttersnacks Jun 08, 2006 10:35 PM

Vito came down with some kind of bad neurological disorder and had to hang up the guitar for good.

That REALLY sucks because he was a really good player.

To get to see Vai and Sheehan together is a treat too. I saw them do G3 a few years ago in Raleigh. All I can say is WOW. I was floored.

Vito too?? I know Jason Becker ( If you ever heard of Cacophony) was totally paralyzed, maybe you mean him? Vito was in White Lion, a good example of my liking the player, not the band. The singer in Badlands died, I know about that. Wow this could get depressing. I did see the Great White singer (best pipes I ever saw live) on VH1 last weekend, along with Brett Michaels, Steven Pearcy and Sebastian Bach. All those guys are so old now, I don’t know how I manged to stay so young LOL. I guess they were really thirty-five pretending to be teenagers back then.

althea Jun 10, 2006 12:02 AM

My husband is the bass player in our house. He has several Ibanez basses (as well as Dean & Schecter), including a 1979 Roadster prototype. All of the electronics are hand wired--it's awesome and sounds like no other bass I've ever heard. He picked it up for $100 from a bass player in So. California in 1980. The guy was asked to rate it by Ibanez, and he didn't like it, so he sold it. He plays through an Ampeg stack.

When we aren't working, cleaning cages or loading & unloading band equipment, we're usually restoring classic Mustangs, field herping, or fishing. Oh, and I'm a doctoral student at the university where I work.

viborero Jun 07, 2006 06:07 PM

I used to play classical and jazz guitar...LOL. I don't think I've touched that thing in about 8 months, other than to move it out of the way so I can fit more snakes in the room! My other passion, though, which I'll never give up is food. I am a chef (from work experience, not schooling) and I love to cook. And eat. And drink.

Now that I'm thinkig about it, I'm gonna go play guitar for a while...good question!!

I've got quite a few hobbies, probably more than I can be productive with. I'll try to make a general list here:

I'm musician/songwriter. I play guitar and bass, and to a lesser extent I "sing". I've got some friends I'll occasionally play with, but we're not organized enough to call ourselves a band. As a solo musician I am currently writing and recording an album at my leisure. It's actually supposed to be a soundtrack for a film I am making with my girlfriend...

...and I do a little bit of film-making/videography. Mostly I've just done music videos for other people's songs, and a few of my own. I'll be acting in a film my girlfriend is working on, the one I am doing the soundtrack for.

I do a bit of stuff in photoshop. I do photo restoration/retouching and colorization at a fairly professional level. I also do quite a bit of photo manipulation... like blending the features of two different peoples faces, or giving people digital make overs. Recently I've been doing a bit of graphic design for work, designing promotional postcards.

There are plenty more, but these probably the ones I am most dedicated to, other than reptiles.

Thunder_Dan Jun 07, 2006 11:51 PM

Well, I've got a list of things I "do" but they really don't require much talent or skill. LOL.
Reading (Sci-Fi/Fantasy mostly with some history as well).
Movies (I love to memorize lines in movies. It just has to be done!).
Comic Books (almost dead in this one... sold 6000 books earlier this year).
Video Games (I know... I'm 38 and I STILL love to play. RPG's mostly).
T.V. (my wife and I love Monk, CSI - all of them. I love Star Trek, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, John Doe, NCIS, The Unit, Close to Home, Without A Trace, and ER). I know... TOO MUCH TV!
I used to be into R/C Cars and Planes, but had to quit that stuff... too addicting! LOL.
I love Trivia of all kinds and especially love to learn whenever the opportunity arises.

...I guess when I talk with my herper friends, I generally just talk snakes and turtles and stuff! You mean bring my guitar over? Anytime... I'm in Tampa every early Sunday morning. Come to think of it, I've never heard you mention anything about music, either... hmmm...

Yeah, both you guys have been hiding that music aspect.
Hey Foxturtle, JS says to tell you he can fix you up with a recruiter he knows.

Camping, fishing, hunting, just being outdoors really. I love to travel and see new places. Now that the kids have finally moved out and are doing well, it is time to start doing more traveling!!! Also enjoy reading and eating! Lots of bass players here, I dabbled way back when but havent picked it up in years.

Main hooby beside corns and kings is collecting old punk vinyl from 75 to 83.

Also live Alabama, but I do not hunt or fish. Used to but grew out of it.

Cool topic!
My other hobbies include:

Guitars/Music - I have several including vintage Epiphone Archtops (which I restore), a Heritage H575, an Epi LS, a Fender Strat and Mustang, and a Gibson Songwriter. I also have a vintage Princeton amp and a Reverend Hellhound 40/60. I play rock, blues and jazz and whatever I can fake.

Steam Locomotives/Trains - I have an extensive collection of HO - mostly PRR - and like to ride behind the real things. I was lucky enough to ride behind the N&W Class A 2-6-6-4 No. 1218. At the time it was the most powerful operating steamer on Planet Earth. And N&W Class J 4-8-4 No. 611, the most powerful and beautiful Northern ever built.

Audio/Music - I have restored and operate a vintage Dynaco ST-70, PAS-3, FM-3 (all tube!) setup. My collection includes 200 LPS - mostly classic rock, 250 CDs and lots of speakers (AR, BA, Sansui).

Outdoor activities include Fishing and Boomerangs - yeah, I like to throw things at myself.

Armoured Fighting Vehicles - Big fan of the Military Channel - or, as I like to call it, the Explosion Channel. BTW there's going to be a WWII reenactors meet here in Oak Ridge soon - they should have all kinds of way cool vehicles including M-3 Stuart Light Tanks, Jeeps, Duce-and-a-Halfs, Kubelwagens, German Halftracks, armoured cars, etc. Sorry no Tigers, but everything they have will go BOOM real good!

Also into rocks, minerals, and fossils.

Whew!

What a jouney!

Cheers,

John D
