Highlighter Egg

stiletto Jun 07, 2006 09:50 AM

I have a batch of 8 eggs, and one of them had a smallish yellow spot (very bright yellow, like a highlighter). I figured it was from the vermiculate as it has some gold colored flakes in it, but the whole egg is turning this bright highlighter yellow. Any ideas what this is?

Without seeing the egg my best guess would be that it is prob. a bad egg.. or an egg that is going bad...

Post a pic of the egg if you can or keep us updated on what happends with it...

Yep, white looks ok. I think shes a goner myself. Starting to get a bit of a musty fungus type smell. Still looks ok. Should I get rid of ole yeller for the sake of the others? How long does it take for eggs to get some sort of a snake like creature inside em?

STEVES_KIKI Jun 07, 2006 09:31 PM

what i would do is take the egg away from the others and check to see if there are any veins in it.... look through the egg towards a lightblub or flashlight and if there are any veins... its a good egg... if not, just house it seperately until it turns brown and shrivels and dents inward... keep us posted

Well I had flashlighted them all about a week or two ago, and they all had veins. Ole Yeller is veinless now. I'll keep him till he shrivels, but outlook isn't so good. I didn't know the veins would disappear if the egg died like that. I figured it was only a sign it was fertilized. How long after an egg dies does it take for the veins to go away?

stiletto Jun 08, 2006 09:27 PM

Well even though I am 90% sure its already gone, it is still full sized and we have it on life support. Fighting a fungus battle though, every morning its got a light white fungus growing on the yellow. Wipes off easy, but comes back by the time I get home in the evening and have to give it another wipe down.

STEVES_KIKI Jun 09, 2006 01:36 AM

Try a q-tip with mouthwash on it and dab on the fungus...thats supposed to work...but i personally have no clue whats up with a bright yellow egg.

Well it has developed a dent on the bottom of the egg, and is still growing fungus daily. It is like a fungus factory that thing. The outside is still smooth and yellow or white. Still cleaning it even though I know its a lost cause. Do eggs get funky if you keep the fungus off them, or will they stay relatively nice looking?

Rivets55 Jun 15, 2006 07:15 PM

Its been a couple days - hows the yellow egg?
Looks like maybe a broken yolk? That can't be good.

From the pic you posted, there is a clear spot in the center of the yellow...my experience with clear spots has not been good.

Recurring fungus is likely to be inside as well as outside - try a tiny bit of an anti-fungal creme for athletes foot.

Good luck,

JPD
