FBT questions

_steve_ Jun 07, 2006 12:32 PM

Im thinking of getting a couple fire bellied toads but I have some questions first. How many would be comfortable in a 20g long aquarium? How should I heat the aquarium? I was thinking of doing either 1/2 and 1/2 or 1/3 or 3/4 water and land. How much water should I put in there and do I need a filter for it? For the land part would gravel on the bottom layer and some eco earth on the top be good?

thanks,
steve

I looove FBT! I had 2 in a 10 gal. tank, so i'm guessing you could do about 4. the set up I had that i highly reccomend is this:
I used some bricks (which fit perfectly) on one end, i had them laying down and 2 of them in a stack and 2 stacks. in the stack closest to the back, i broke a brick in half and set a filer next to the brick. (total 3 1/2 bricks, make sense?) then i used that green moss stuff ontop of the bricks. I used the gravel thats for fish tanks in the bottom of the water part. I had a filter on mine, it was sitting on the bottom brick and next to my 1/2 brick with 2 regular brick stacked in front of it. I filled in any holes with the gravel. (i hope this makes sense). I had probably 6-8 inches of water. I originally got a little island for them and they didnt use it so i turned it into a ramp that went from the bottom of the tank to the land part- they used that a lot. I had some little plants and things that came to just below the surface of the water so they could 'rest' on the plants and still be in the water. mine rarely got out of the water. When i dumped crickets in for them, they would watch them and wait for them to jump in the water and then go get them (which eliminated the benifits of calcium dusting). They were really really happy. I didn't use any heat in my tank but the temp in my room was pretty nice. mine even layed eggs after about 6 months- they ate them all before i could move them....
anyway- I'm hopefully going to get a huge tank soon so i can have a bunch of them. anyway- hope that helps.... i probably forgot one of your questions but if you think of anything else let me know. :D

five or six would be good for a 20 gallon, as far as the water portion, i would just do a water dish. most people don't realize how much land they need, maybe 1/3 water. i just use a very large water dish. room temp. water is fine. it is easier to clean. if you use dirt don't just have it with no glass divider, it makes a mess when the frogs go from the land into the water, i would suggest putting moss over the dirt if you want to do that. good luck and contact with more questions!
