I think it depends on how you want to show them. I have always used small containers especially when they are young. A 10 gal is fine in my opinion but some people like wide open space. Musks look cool in a tank with fish providing they have a foothold, (sticks, etc) to hold on. Muds like shallow water so you have to be careful with them.
I have one mud I caught as a hatchling in SC and is now 23 years old.
i use the rule of about one square food of surfcae area per inch or inch and a half or turtle
so a one inch turtl eis okay in a ten gallon a two to three incher okay in a twenty etc
so a larger american mud or musk...say 6 inches would get a 55 gallon long tank or a 60 breeder
if you have a big south american guy near 8 or 10 inches then you might start thinking of small feeder troughs or tanks near 90 - 125 gallons

Well, I'm probably one who is out of the ordinary, but my two musks (mother/daughter) share a 2,500 gallon indoor, inground pond with several other turtles.
