Bok Choy

Fener1 Jun 07, 2006 09:17 PM

I have a question about bok choy... I know that you can feed the leaves of it but can you feed the white stalk? I know that for torts they can't have the inner part of any lettuce (stalk that runs up the center of the plant) b/c it binds minerals and vitamins in their system. Is that the same with bok choy. It has a very white large stalk and I'm wondering what to do with it.

I'd be curious to hear about this. I do the leaves, but some of the stalk gets in there.

If the stem is considered fiber (which I think it is)....
http://www.feinberg.northwestern.edu/nutrition/factsheets/fiber.html
"Although fiber has the capacity to bind minerals, this property does not interfere with mineral balances since most sources of fiber provide minerals in amounts that compensate for any binding that occurs. In addition, fermentation will release minerals such as calcium which can be absorbed in the colon. And finally, only foods containing fiber with unsubstituted uronic acid groups will bind minerals to any appreciable extent."

Not sure if I'm reading it right or not...

Well about the only stalk I give my uro is romaine stalk mainly because it has a lot of water in it and I don't give him much anyway.I add it to his staple greens for him to get a little extra water,as for the other stalk's,he doesn't eat a whole head of the greens before I have to throw it out and get new greens so there's never a shortage of leafy greens for him. They will last about 10 days before I have to get fresh greens, which reminds me I must get some tomorrow.

Really an excellent question, one we've never contemplated. We've for years chopped up the main stalks thinking they were a good moisture source. Outwardly, all's good so far & they definitely enjoy them. Hope we can get some experienced opinions on this. Doug, you're the toxicology guru.

Yes you can feed the white part but I like to boil it or steam it first , then cut it in to small cubes .

Why boil or steam it? These guys are seed eaters & if you've ever been chomped by an adult Uro you'll realize that there's absolutely no need to soften their food!
