Incubator Designs?

EFisher Jun 07, 2006 09:28 PM

I have recently decided to start breeding my male Picta. I have found plenty of sites explaining how to create nesting boxes for females, but I can not seem to find anyone who has posted a design for an egg incubator.

I have heard that poultry egg incubators that do not turn the eggs can work, but they can often be far too dry for reptile eggs.

If anyone has any better suggestions or even "blueprints" on how to design an incubator myself, I would be greatly appreciative.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

The problem with most home made incubators are they are very hard to regulate the temperature and fluctuating temps are no good. I never had good luck with several different ones i made and tried. The styro chicken one's have worked very good for me. The trick is getting the perlite or vermiculite or what ever medium you use the correct water to substrate ratio and keeping the eggs in a proper sealed container. Keeping water inside the incubator helps maintain the moisture, just don't let it dry out. I'm sure theres some that had good success with homemades ones but they were frustrating to me. good luck

Thank you for the suggestion.

After I posted this message, I started looking into a bit more. There is a Hova-Bator? model that seems like it is fairly inexpensive and very effective. I'll probably go in that direction.

Thanks again!

Here's mine. I made it out of a cabinet from Home Depot, some flex-watt and a helix dbs-1000. There's a piece of styrofoam (not shown) that closes the heat in on the front. There's about a 2 inch gap in the shelf in the back of the cabinet to allow the heat to flow upward. I've used it every year for 7 or 8 years now and it still works flawlessly. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
