Too much humidity solution

Krystal87 Jul 31, 2003 09:30 PM

Ok, I found this thing at Krogers called "Dehumidifier- Keep it Dry" It has calcium carbonate in it. Is this safe around my Desert Horned Dragons? I plan on keeping it beside their tank, although I wish I could put it inside their tank, but it has some nasty fumes. Does anyone know about this? I have a problem with the high humidity here.

I could swear calcium carbonate is just chalk... shouldn't hurt anyone. You could get one of those electric de-humidifiers meant for people if that doesn't work. They run about 30 bucks.

What i found worked for me when i had Anoles was using those ventilation fans, look like and probably are the same things as computer case fans, i just had two that sucked the air out of my tank. Instead of turning into a tropical jungle when i misted for them to drink it was just perfect.

when you saw sucked the air out, what do you mean?

Did you put the fan inside of the tank and it made all the air flow out?

I don't know how to set up my little fan. I can't put it in the tank because my bearded dragon might hurt himself. And when I put it clamped to the side of the top of the tank pointing in the humidity doesn't really go down much. So do I just put the fan on top of the tank with the breeze pointing outwards? And it sucks the air out from the bottom of the fan?

A top model of my tank. The little O being the fan clamped to my glass. Breeze is blowing outwards, fan clamped to top, no breezing coming in anywhere from the fan. Does the fan actually suck air from the bottom of itself?

Don't mind my horrible design. Looked better before I posted it.

I had a screen top so i just set two of the fans on the screen. One on one end and the other on the other end. One end blew air in and the other sucked it out. I'll see if i can find an old pic if not i'll scrounge some thing up.

Being a chemistry teacher and someone who majored in geology, I can tell you that calcium carbonate is pretty harmless. Most common form is limestone and usually formed from the microscopic shells of plankton. Same stuff used in alot of antacid pills.

If its in a powder form, the grains are very tiny and might cause problems.

If there is any other chemicals in it, those might be something different.

If there is no "ingredients" list, try looking up the product on the web or calling the company to confirm there is only calcium carbonate.
