Golden Gecko Setup

Krystal19_85 Jun 08, 2006 02:13 PM

OK, I just upgraded my golden from a 10gal to a 40gal and I was wondering what you all think of the new setup.

I just threw it together with stuff I had laying around, so it's nothing spectacular, but it works. Now she has more room than she knows what to do with.

Now, I have read that goldens would rather be alone, but would it be too horrible to get her a buddy? My friend has a male and female cramped into a 10gal together, they get along fine, not that I would do that, but would a m/f pair be a better idea than 2 females? Keeping in mind that I am not trying to breed, but it woulden't hurt my feelings if they did and I would be prepared for it if it did happen. Is there something else that could share the tank? I know mixing species isn't a good idea, but a tree frog or something from the same locality maybe?

Thats looks real nice and i'm sure your Golden will enjoy the bigger tank much more. I would cover the back and at least one side with decorated aqurium backing to give it more privacy. More fake plants hanging from the back and sides will give it much more hiding and and look even better in my opinion.

We're working on it, this was just what I had laying around. Thanks for the compliments! I'll try to update it when I get more for inside.

Any tips about possible tankmates?

I don't have a lot of experience with Goldens to say to much. As long as the tank mate is another Golden you should be fine, just be sure to not put two males together.

Hello--
Your set-up looks great! I've kept Goldens for seven years, and they really do like their "real estate". (LOL) At present I have one male in a 29H tank with furnishings similar to yours. He was my first Golden, and is really personable--will take superworms right out of my fingers or off of hemostats.

I've had up to 1.4 in a HUGE viv, as well as pairs, and found the secret to fairly peaceful coexistence is making sure that you provide enough foliage screens vertically, and hides horizontally, so that each gecko can achieve privacy at will. Both males and females tend to be territorial, with males more so. Neosporin works well to heal the wounds of interlopers.

JJ doesn't play well with other Goldens, thus he's always been housed by himself. A virus of some type went through the 1.4 within a matter of weeks, and all died. It was strange because they had been together for over 2 years. I strongly suspect that the stress of being housed together factored into a lowered immune response?

If you do decide to get your girl a mate, be sure to quarantine him and have both vet checked for parasites. Give both private spaces and multiple basking/cool areas, dishes for baby food/fruit--in other words; lessen the reasons each needs to be territorial.

Goldens are very cool geckos--their acrobatic antics are amusing to watch. I will try to post some pics of my guy. I wish you the very best with yours!

regards,
althea

Thanks for the imput, I am considering getting her a boyfriend after a while. I ALWAYS quarentine like mad, I have WAY too many animals to not be nuts for quarentine and proper acclimation.

Maybe at next month's show we can pick someone up for her... hummm as bad as I am with names, I better start thinking now! LOL Any suggestions? Her name is Moorea (pronounced Mo-ray-ya, it's an island in tahiti and it means 'yellow lizard') so something that would go along with Moorea... humm...

. . .how about "Tamoon"? It just seems to go with Moorea, and is a character name from an original Star Trek episode. How many animals do you have? All reptiles? We have 27 snakes,
6 leos, 1 golden gecko, 1 bearded dragon. Fur babies: 4 cats, 1 rhodesian ridgeback, and 1 rat.

rgds,
althea

I'll mull it over, it usually takes me weeks to come up with good names, I had a dog who was almost named Puppy because I haden't thought of a name, so he was starting to think his name was Puppy! LOL

We have (today LOL, it's always changing)
0.2.0 Dogs (Mutts)
1.0.0 Cat
3 Dwarf Hamsters (was 4 untill we got the cat )
0.0.1 Golden Gecko
4.6.2 Ball Pythons (couple dinking projects, pastel, het albino, het pied, and a few normals)
0.0.1 Cali Kingsnake
1.0.0 Columbian RT Boa
A whole truckload of fish tanks, 9 currently up and running 5-75 gallons
2 ponds (100 gallons and 4,000 gallons with lots of golfish and a few Koi)

Lost our rat colony a month or 2 ago, waiting untill we move to start up a new one and possibly a small group of mice also. I also breed guppies and bettas and we will be breeding the BPs starting this fall. Thinking with the new house comes a new dog too, we'll see what hubby says. LOL Either a tea cup Chihuahua/Yorkie or anything that has short fur and has the potential to reash 200 pounds or more. Thinking St. Bernard or Mastiff of some sort. LOL I like tiny things and huge things, I already have 2 medium dogs.

You can never have too many animals

at least I gave the name thing a shot! I've been poring through a book of goddesses looking for a name for a new snake--so far have a list of 10 possibles, and I'm only in the K's (LOL)! Anyway, I snapped a few pics of my golden this evening--they aren't terrific, but my heart was in the attempt.

I offered JJ a split blueberry on forcepts tonight, and he went nuts over it--snarfed two! (Usually he gets mashed, ripe mango). Then he had a superworm, so he was pretty content by the time I pointed the lens at him!

She's a pretty little girl--love that long tail! She looks fairly young in the pics--how long is she? I also took a look at your python pics. Super animals--India just blows me away! She is one unique looking ball!

I have one normal WC adult ball python--Mokee. She has a unique pattern, and was a gift from my husband. She's a petite girl, just shy of 34 inches. For six years she has been the only snake in my collection who refused f/t food items. A few weeks ago I saw her peeping out of her hide as I was handing out rat snacks. I offered her one, and she snarfed it right down. She's been eating f/t rat pups ever since. Go figure--gotta' love them along with their quirks.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, actually I was told the person who had her before me had her for 4 years, so I am guessing she's no baby. She is full grown, for a female, actually a little on the big side. She's definitly spoiled! LOL

Thanks for the compliments, India is a georgious girl (who eats like there's no tommorow no matter what you put in front of her!) I got her for $40 from someone who coulden't find time to take care of her, she'll be breeding my pastel next year. I showed her pics to a few people and they all think there is something to her. Her eyes are lighter than our pastels! She is nearly pastel herself, and her belly is CLEAN. She also has stripe of faded scales along her spine that look axanthic. The person I got her from said that she got her from a breeder who was (in her words) 'trying to get a morph, but didn't' So my first guess is Pastel Sibling, but who knows, maybe she's het for something?! LOL I woulden't be shocked if she was a "ugly" pastel. She has the eyes and she is really bright, just not quite pastel in my eyes, but my pastel is from Garrick, so I have yet to see an ugly pastel in person, India is anyone's guess for now.

OH, I liked the name you chose, I just usually end up with a few or a list and I watch them to see which fits before I choose.

I have 9 leopard geckos and 1 african fat tailed all were very hard to name:Aradia, Kyros, Enya, Malkia, Tuari, Kaida, Zaria, Rhys, Devlin, and Halyn. A lot of them have a meaning that describes that particular lizard~Devlin=fierce, kaida=little dragon, Halyn=unlike any other~she was a resuce with no tail, a head lac., and very messed up eyelids.~ I got them all from looking around on Babynames.com,if you need a name you should definately try that site, you can look them up by sex, by first letter, and by meaning. Hope that helps
