Florida yellow flies for food?

wellbe1 Jun 08, 2006 07:46 PM

Has anyone in florida feed yellow flies to their chameleon? It is that time of the year for the flies and are some what easy to catch.

I don't know what a yellow fly is. Be cautious of the larger horsefly type insects. They can injure a cham.

These flies are relatives of the deer flies and give a VERY NASTY BITE that usually turns into a welt. Some of our Big skinks that run around get bit, and the bite causes a swelling. I would most definitely NOT recomment the yellow fly.

when I looked up the photo of one (my curious mind!) it looked very much like the deer fly which we have up here as well. I'll take mosquitoes and black flies (unless you live north of MA you don;t these other nasties!) over a deer fly any day! they are nasty! If they can bite into reptile skin and leave a welt then they are definitely not food! Granted in the wild certain things may feed on them, but why risk it, huh?
