Quadrivittata--Love at first bite-4 pics

iriri Jun 08, 2006 09:47 PM

Hi, I mostly lurk around here, but I am crazy in love with rat snakes. In my university herpetology class, I decided yellow rat snakes were the best ever, and my fourth yellow rat arrived today via FedEx.

This is Julian. He's 3 years old. He still has his saddle pattern, which is interesting, because many yellows half his size are already striped. If anyone has an explanation for this, please let me know. He's about 3.5 feet long. He has a wonderful personality, and my friends ask me to bring him alone when I visit.

This is Gregor. He came from an animal rescue; they had him for adoption because he was pretty bad-tempered. He's fine now; just needed some handling by someone who wasn't afraid of a few bites.

Marcus is the littlest. He came from the same rescue as Gregor. He has a nasty scar from unknown origins, but he is fully mobile past the scar, so there was no spinal damage. He is very small. Marcus is a pretty friendly little fellow.

Finally, Gamma arrived today. He was the snake that was advertised in the classifieds as needing to "find someone else to bite." He's actually easier to deal with than Gregor was when I got him.

The yellows from the North part of the range commonly retain saddles into adulthood. For example, some of the yellows that I've seen from around Jacksonville, FL have very bold saddles as well as stripes. They are also quite "dirty" and seem to have some black ratsnake influence to them.

LOL,
Didn't James Cagney say something like "You dirty yellow rat!" ?

BTW - Nice quads!
