what is the right tort for me?

Chameleonowner Jun 09, 2006 03:49 AM

I live in south florida and was wondering what type of tortoise can survive in my back yard. I am planning on putting it in like a wire fence circle pen as a hatchling and then we will see in the future. most people said that a red foot was a good choice but i want to make sure. Also what types or food do you guys feed your torts and how often do you feed hatchlings. i will appreciate and helo i can get. thanks

You would probably do best with one that likes high humidity. Redfoots grow to about a foot, yellow foots a little bigger and Burmese Mountain torts a little/lot bigger.
I wouldn't suggest wire fencing. If they can see thru it they struggle to push thru. I sometimes wonder if they know they have a big shell behind themselves. I have watched my torts try and squeeze thru an openning 1/5th there size? With wire they could cut themselves. You also want to provide a good hide in the enclosure and some mulch of leaves because they like to take cover. If hatchlings it may need a top to protect from predators. Just some suggestions, Tom
