Question about new leopard gecko

blankminded Jun 09, 2006 11:42 AM

I just recived a gecko and was woundering what would be the best diet for him. Hes a full grown albino male. He was giving to me for free from someone who didnt want him anymore. Ive kept banded geckos and golden geckos but never leopards. I know the basics but was woundering if there was a list of other foods besides crickets and mealworms that i could offer him as a snack or treat. thanks in advance for all your help.

Heres a picture of him i took lastnight

Wax worms are a good treat. My guys also like grapes, bananas, mangos, oranges, and apples. I know that sounds really weird, but my guys and girls absolutely LOVE fruit.

I have never heard of that. I was told they are strict insectivores :/

Yeah it's really weird, but they love it. They seem to like grapes and bananas the most. I went away for the weekend and my mom got the bright idea to put pieces in their mealworm dish. She told me when I came home that she did and they liked it. I figured the mealworms munched on it, but when I took the mealies out and put just fruit in it disappeared quickly. So now I offer it to all of mine and most really like it.

Don't feed them fruit. They are not designed to digest it properly nor does it have the nutrition they require. Also stay away from wax worms as they are high in fat and low in nutrition. Once they start some may refuse to eat anything else which will lead to you having to starve it to get it back to a normal diet. What is most impotant is how you gutload your feeders for their nutrition.
Personally I use mealworms the majority of the time. Acouple times a year I offer pinky mice, silkworms, or even crickets.

Good luck with him!

Thank you all for the advice and help. I was do some more research and found phoenix worms on a few different websites. They say that they have around 60 times the amount of calcium then mealworms. From that i was thinking it would be a bad idea to feed them daily. Wouldnt it be good to offer it as a treat a few days a week? Does anyone else know more about phoenix worms or has anyone used them?
