Dehydrated snake

tempest Jun 10, 2006 01:15 AM

I just adopted a male albino bullsnake from a guy who's getting out of snakes. The snake appears to be quite dehydrated. I gave it some water, and he gulped it down like crazy.
He's a real nice snake (aside from the water thing) and I'd like to save him.
What do you guys recommend for getting a nearly dead snake back to life?
PS I've been keeping snakes for 20 years but have never had one in such bad health.

-readily available drnking water.
-a humid hide box. take sphagnum moss soak and wring it out well, pack the box 1/3 to 1/2 full. if the box is near the heat source that may increase the humidity in the box. directly over/under the heat source usually makes the box too warm.
-small meals.
-appropriate thermal gradient in the enclosure
-a trip to the vet for full assessment. if the snake is really dehydrated they can give some subcutaneous fluid or electrolytes, but if it is drinking, probably not necessary.

just some thoughts, most definitely not a totally inclusive list.

good luck
