Update on sick female/ weird behavior

xxxxraixxxx Jun 10, 2006 11:27 AM

I took Jasmine to the vet as reccomended.. waiting on the dr to call back with info regarding the stool sample I provided..he suspects its some kind of parasite that is causing her not to gain weight.

Now on to the weird stuff...I'm in the process of cleanign out the terrarium, so I had the 3 of the chucks out on the floor in a "play area" (at the moment one of the bedrooms in my apartment is empty since my roommate just moved out)...I noticed my adult male, Wally, was doing a lot of "push-ups", I assumed he was letting the others know that this play area was his new territory..but anyway I walked in to check on them after a few minutes and Wally was attacking the juvenile male, Petey (who is probably no more than a year and a half old as he is still light colored..)..biting at his legs and Petey was biting back. I manage to separate the two...and then 10 minutes later Wally attacks the female, Jasmine!! He was biting at her neck, but she was just taking it without putting up a fight, so I watched for a minute to see if this was just some kind of ritual...but he had a flap of her skin in his mouth and was pulling on her, it looked like he was really trying to hurt her.. so with some difficulty I broke it up.

Both victims are fine, he didn't break any skin. They were a little shaken up but calmed down pretty quickly.

These 3 have been cagemates since April, and this is the first time I've ever seen this type of behavior. I could understand the 2 males, although with Petey being so young I didn't think this would be going on so soon. I was really surprised he was biting Jasmine...but then I'm still questioning whether he would have done any real damage if I had left them alone?

Anyone have any other ideas about what just happened?

It sounds like the two male were fighting for the female then the the nale and female were breeding

The male biting the back of the female's neck is pretty common courtship behavior. I'd try to separate the chucks and not reintroduce Jasmine until she's recovered from whatever is ailing her. Breeding and egg laying take a lot out of a healthy female. Egg production can prove fatal to females that are underweight and already dealing with other health problems. The fights between the males could also easily escalate and the little male could be severly injured or killed if someone is not there to intervene.

Good luck getting Jasmine well again!
