Cyrus' weight?

lele Jun 10, 2006 01:26 PM

Cyrus is 6 months old and weighs about 50g. He does not seem to eat much, his poops are small. He wants to get out onto his jungle gym so badly that he forget to eats. I actually have a cup set in a plant that he can feed from when he is out but does not seem interested. I think I may have to force him to stay ion for a few days, which means he will literally climb the walls and sulk. He seems fine otherwise.

Curious as to weight of other nosy be's around his age...

thanks

That sounds about right. I don't have a nosey be but I do have an ambilobe (locale doesn't really make that much difference size wise and besides nosey be and ambilobe are right next to each other). When my boy was ~6mo he weighed 58g. Try giving him some foods that he has never had before like hornworms or roaches or maybe even a pinky mouse if he'll take it. Also, many chams are real finicky when it comes to cup feeding, that is to say they get bored of it pretty easily, so try letting insects free roam in his enclosure so it can mimic his natural behavior.

He generally free range feeds in his cage, I just put the cup out for him while he's "at the gym." He used to eat from it.

He gets roaches, supers, crickets (not much longer as I am slowly moving on to roaches as staple). I don't feed hornworms (see my article on hornworms on chameleonnews.com if you want to know why ) and I definitely do not feed animals (mice - frozen or otherwise) to my animals, but thanks for those suggestions. He's a weird one - first herp I've met that doesn't like waxworms!

It seems to be more of an issue of him REALLY wanting to get out - yeah, I have this habit of spoiling my animals - and forgetting to eat! He does go back in to bask and drink, but not to eat - there is always a cluster of crix up by his light and obviously, can't let the roaches and supers free range. Well, I suppose he won;t starve himself - the food is available. He does get an occasional moth or fly (the latter raised, not found).

Since your's is similar in weight I won't worry - too much

thanks,
lele

Hi Lele,

I'm new to chameleons, and hope to acquire one in the near future. I don't have any advice to your query but wanted to know what type of setup you have. It sounds pretty cool with a "gym" and he sounds very happy if he want to get out and play on it. Also so how much handling do you do? Most of the information available says they should almost be display only, with contact very minimal. I understand all chams are unique and will tolerate this differently. This was my one concern about getting a panther chameleon, I love to play with my pets and fear I would shorten his life. Thanks, in advance, for your response.

Cheers,

Michelle

Michelle - I just wrote a long reply to you and then lost the text. Will have to rewrite later - no time now. In the meantime, check out pics of Luna on my webshots page for jungle gym (they are in a few albums). It is different now, but you will get the idea.

sorry,
lele

I'm sorry that message got lost I was looking forward to your response. What a pain, that should really get changed. I think it is great you would go out of your way for such an in-depth answer to a newbie question. I loved looking at your photo album, thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Michelle
