Elseya latisternums always floating?????

juicemouse Jun 11, 2006 12:48 AM

I was just wondering if anybody could tell me why my E. latisternums might be floating all the time? They are moderate aquatic respirators which utilise special organs called bursae in their cloaca to absorb oxygen from the water and extend dive times. In the wild they are bottom walkers and are usually found hidden under logs etc. I have had them in a large aquarium now for almost a week and they just float at the surface even though there is plenty of space and places for them to hide. Also the temp is low (16-17 degreesC) and the dissolved oxygen in the tank is high (DO 9 mg/L).
Is this floating an indication of something else or is it just something they do until they become acclimated? Do other highly aquatic turtle species exhibit this behaviour as well?

Thanks for your help.

This same thing happened to me last year. A turtle was sent to me, and was much too warm upon arrival. The turtle ate well, basked, swam vigorously(only at the surface). It took many months, but the turtle started to deteriorate further. I, as well as the breeder and the Veterinarian, suspected heat trauma from shipping. All we could do was support with nutrient therapy. Sadly, the turtle passed. I really don't wish this on you! I sincerely hope that you have better results.
