Am I a Green Frog

drrich2 Jun 11, 2006 01:21 AM

Hi:

A tadpole from the northwestern TN/southwestern KY region caught in a farm pond for use as a feeder metamophosed into this young frog that my wife is somewhat enamored with and we may keep as a pet. It only recently finished absorbing its tail; it eats small grasshoppers from the backyard, and today a moth. Is this a green frog?

probaly a bullfrog, greens have marking and such on their legs that would apperant. if it spends a great deal of its time in water, not just around it, it could be a pig frog, but its probaly a bull based on the pic.

The frog only has the option currently to rest on large basking platforms in aquatic tanks, so it has little choice but to be around water. It seldom startles into the water but when it does seems to be fairly comfortable there.

I thought green frogs had a dorsolateral ridge, which made me hesitant to call it a bullfrog.

Pig frog, eh? Not familiar with those, although I've heard of them. Any tips on their care if that's what it turns out to be?

i'm pretty sure that it is a bull, but pigs require the same habitat as bulls and greens, though they tend to spend more time in the water. feeding requirements are also the same, with the exception that pig frogs tend to be more apt to catching live fish. allowing live rosie reds and small goldfish to live in the tank with the frog as feeders will be beneficial to the frog, as well as feeding crickets, grasshoppers, wax worms, mealworms, earthworms, pinkie mice, small tadpoles (not toad), slugs, etc. As adults, pigs as well as bulls enjoy large tadpoles and small declawed crayfish, larger goldfish, small mice, nightcrawlers, and huge grasshoppers.

2 More advanced herpers both affirmed it's a bull frog. You know, that's just not good. Nooooooot good. Had a big one when I was a kid; the things get HUGE.
