Green Tree frogs and White's Tree frogs

Bergmantis Jun 11, 2006 04:59 PM

I understand mixing species is generally not a good idea, but will the toxins from white's and greens have a big effect on each other? I am setting up a large terrarium and will make sure each is cared for properly, so long as they can survive together. Also, could I add a firebelly toad with these? If anyone could reccommend any good caresheets on housing frogs together or terrarium setups, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Mat

Firebelly toads are very toxic and should not be mixed with anything.. it is a very very bad idea to even consider it..

Whites and green tree frogs need about the same care, but whites will readily eat pinkies and fuzzy mice.. a gtf would certainly become a snack..

A good rule of thumb for everyone asking about mixed tanks..

If you don't have enough experience and knowledge to know the answer to "can it be done?" then you should not even think about trying it.

If you want a frog.. get one and learn.. in a year or so.. get a new species..

I agree with Tim, the gtf becoming a snack was the first thing that came to mind when i read that post. Some white's can get very big, 4.5 - 5 inches big. I also agree that experience is the key to mixing.

Listen to him, he makes good sense.

Ok thanks...thats just what I have read everywhere else...The main thing I am looking to put in my terrarium is variation, even if it is only 2 types of frogs...so is there any hardy species that can be kept together? what about a frog and a newt (firebelly, rough skin, or eastern, etc)?

Thanks,

Mat

once again, until you have considerable experience with all species in question, you should not consider mixing..

If you want a diverse vivarium.. mix it up with plants and landscaping, but stick with one species for the time being. If you want a variety of color. You can look into some of the gecko species (crested come in a variety of colors.. ). But, you really need to stick with 1 species, and learn its care requirments first. Once your thoroughly understand it, you can expand.

In regard to the mixing thing, I would say no as well. Also with the firebellies you will find out that they/their toxins will kill things even if they are removed and another frog moved in.

I have however in a large tank seen firebelly toads and firebelly newts together. I don't know how common this is, it was at a reputable pet shop, and everything seemed fine, although it was a huge tank.

Again I don't know if that is ok, it's just what I saw.

thanks for that post, I think it will help some people understand that it really isn't smart to take to heart what pet store people say unless you know from experience that the pet store has good and competent employees (meaning they know about the animals they take care of, not that they don't do work)
