Hatchlings!!!!

Snakemother Jun 11, 2006 10:02 PM

I have a hatchling tonight, and one nose sticking out of an egg!!! And it's only day 59!!! This is only my second time of breeding dragons, and the first clutch was a few years ago.
Is it okay to leave him on the vermitculite for the day he should stay in the incubator? Also, it it okay to mist him already, or wait till I remove him from the incubator?
Thanks - my daughter and I are over the moon right now with excitement!

congrats!!! 59?? thats about right...mine usually hatch at 60-65 but day 59 is fine.

yea u can mist him to get the vermiculite off but dont drown him of course lol. its fine to leave him in the vermiculite and keep him in incubator for 24-36 hrs.

congrats and good luck

Often hatchlings will stay in their egg for a day or two, while they rest from breaking the egg and to absorb any remaining eggyolk.

The hatched little guy seems much more alert and active today (head up, moving around) and I don't see anything attached to him - could he have already absorbed his yolk and be ready to leave the incubator? I know he's not been in there more than 24 hours, because I checked the incubator yesterday morning and the eggs were unhatched.
The second guy has more of his head out now, but still lounging in his egg. I think you're right that this guy at least is taking his time and absorbing his yolk while hatching!
Thanks greatly for your advice (and support; we're a little giddy here! LOL!)

i leave my babies in the incubator even after they are fully out of egg for 24-36 hrs. they usually sleep anyways in that time anyways even if i put them in a rearing bin. they dont need food due to the yolk and the temps are fine for them of course.
id go ahead and leave the fully hatched guy in there another day or so. 24 hrs after you noticed him fully out of egg id say.

good luck

I've always wondered about this... Leaving them in the incubator with the other eggs that haven't hatched yet isn't dangerous for the eggs waiting to hatch is it? I suppose if they mostly sleep they don't disturb the other eggs too much, right?

Just curious...
