Another breeding colony question???/

python36 Jun 12, 2006 12:06 PM

How do you guys who keep colonies together tell which female laid which eggs. I am going to put my 5 females together with a male and I want to be able to tell who was the mother. Will it be obvious who laid the eggs after they are laid? Can you follow the gestation of the females easily. Is it really physically obvious?
Thanks

I keep 1.3 breeding groups and I can tell you that it is really hard to be 100% correct when trying to find out which female laid what. Sometimes I can find 2 clutches (and sometimes all 3 clutches) of eggs in the nest box. The only way to say which female laid what is to watch the female dig the hole but that isn't easy by any means. What I do is set up individual incubator containes for each breeding group so that when they hatch I can say that these babies when with that breeding group. Some females are very regular (every month) in their egg laying but some female cycles can vary a little. The only way to be a 100% is to keep the females seperate.
