Freezing crickets-any thoughts on this?

JadeFox Jun 12, 2006 02:42 PM

My bearded dragon, 4-1/2 years old, she's used to being handfed. Crickets die easy, and are a pain to keep.

Sooo what I've been doing as soon as I get them I super gutload them for 48 hours, then put the large crickets in a plastic baggie, then throw them in the freezer.

Prior to feeding I take a few out, run hot water under them until quite soft, wait a few more minutes, then BARELY--and I do mean BARELY--dust them with vitamin powder and calcium with D3 (barely see them dusted). The crickets are perfectly room temperature.

The crickets in the freezer as a rule of thumb will last SIX MONTHS (I assume six months since most frozen meats humans consume will last about 6 months).

This is a senior beardie. No more than 2 crickets a day, then lots of fresh greens (NOT frozen but fresh greens). Any thoughts about freezing crickets? My beardie is perfectly healthy.

Thanks
JadeFox

never heard of a problem doing this. they sell freeze dried crickets from some cricket breeders. called crunchy crickets. so i see no problem
