Advice needed for baby gecko recovery

redoaksblues Jun 12, 2006 03:04 PM

Hello, I recently acquired this baby gecko about two weeks ago, she is an unknown morph.......her belly has looked like this since day 1, she weighs 5 grams...(unknown age but young). Fecal test shows no parasites, vet does not think she has an impaction. She poops (white urates, dark remainder - small).
I have her in a 10 gallon talk, uth heater, 90-95 warm side with humid hide, cool side 80-85 with cocunut hut...paper towel as substrate with tile over uth heater. I have been "feeding" her a mixture of chicken baby food/jumpstart/mineral oil whcih i put on her nose which she does lick. She is alert and active.

I would recommend picking up some wax worms for your little one and try them out. I use the wax worms for my pregnant females to keep some good weight on while they lay eggs. Make sure you offer a variety in food choice, crickets (dusted of course), appropriate sized mealworms, wax worms, etc. Keep a dish of calcium in his/her terrarium, and make sure he/she has plenty of water. As long as he/she is defecating solid food should be fine to offer. I am feeding a rescued leo who is severely impacted a mixture similar to what you are using, but I think he/she may need a more solid food source. I could be wrong, this is just my opinion. Good luck!

Is the dark part (poop) solid or runny? Does it smell a lot?

When you are saying her stomach has been like that....do you mean the dark spot?

Her poop looks normal, firm (not too firm) but very little bit of it.... Yes, the dark on her underside has always been like that. The vet said there as no impaction.

The liver on mine looked just like that also. No matter what I did (and trust me, I did everything) It just didn't seem capable of absorbing the nutrients. I also had mine checked by a vet and there were no parasites showing up either.
It didn't make it. I even had a necropsy done and the vet found nothing. They said that sometimes "failure to thrive" is the only explanation. A defect in the internal organs or digestive tract.

I wish you luck... but it's a tough road.
Keep it hydrated, that seems to do almost as much as the feeding to perk them up.

I recently went to my local pet shop and found one in similar condition. It was very upsetting. I am going to call tomorrow and complain and see if I can't do anything to help. Maybe see if I can talk them into letting me take it to fatten it up a little bit. or something, I don't know what to do.

Good luck!!! Hope everything works out for you, and your gecko!
