leucistic black rat update

begunwithaletter Jun 12, 2006 03:33 PM

here's a better picture of the regurgitating juvenile... he ate half of a very small pinkie two days ago and hasn't regurgitated yet! He's actually moving around in the rubbermaid a lot more than he did in the larger enclosure, so hopefully with him being so much more comfortable, he'll improve quickly, and start GROWING!

What are you using for bedding. That looks like pine bark in the photo. You should be using aspen and not pine or cedar that have oils in them. Your choice of bedding could be the problem.

He's on paper towels right now, actually. The substrate he WAS on was REPTI-BARK, which I use in my display tank. I had him in that tank for several hours on the first day, but since he was so timid I moved him into a smaller tank with paper towels as the substrate, and now he's in a ventilated rubbermaid, covered with towels on three sides and the top, with a water dish and a hide. He's doing substantially better in the small tank, and he's constantly moving around looking for food.

Sounds like you're on the right track. Keep up the good work, but remember: slow and easy. I got too confident with a regurging Corn once, and as soon as I gave him a whole meal again he started puking all over again. Had to go through the whole process all over again.

yeah, I'm having to hold myself in check and not feed him sooner than recommended!

it's tough though, because he needs a few fat pinkies to get him back up to a comfy weight...

Don't I know! It sucks cause your instinct tells you that more food = healthier snake. Unfortunately in this case, that's just not true. Be patient. Give him a full week and then another half. After that, give him the smallest pinky you can find and gradually increase the size from there.

The only thing more frustrating than the wait is to have to start all over!!
