Eggs not hatching - day 79??

tazziesmommy Jun 12, 2006 03:44 PM

I have 24 eggs incubating that were layed on March 25th. There were originally 28, but 4 collapsed pretty quickly and the rest have been looking good until now. One collapsed a few days ago and I finally removed it today because it is all shrivled up and a couple more are starting to look not too hot either. Has anyone successfully hatched any eggs after this long? Is there anything I should do or should I just keep waiting? They've been growing nicely and are nice and big, but 79 days is a long time from everything I've read. I had day gecko eggs in the incubator so these have been in an improvised setup with a somewhat lowere temp (about 81 degrees). I knew they wouldn't hatch quickly at that temp, but until recently, they have appeared to be developing normally.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Lisa

79 days is a long time but at 81 degree temp its no suprise. as long as the eggs looks big and look good keep them in there. remove the ones that go bad, they will start to mold. just be patient and they will suprise you one day. keep checking the incubator though daily. good luck

Thank you! I feel much better knowing that it's not that unusual at my temps. I've got the baby bins all set up and ready and I'm contstantly checking on them. I sure hope they come soon!

Thanks again,
Lisa

Don't give up at 81 degrees it is not to rare for them to go in to the 80 plus day mark. Have you candled them to see how the babies are doing inside. The best way to do this is get one of the small flash lights with a tight bright beam to it. Turn off the lights and shine the light on the side of the egg. My eggs usually do start sinking in a week prior to when they are going to hatch. I think they like to scare us. Best of luck

Thank you! I candled them in the beginning to make sure they were fertile, but I haven't done anything since then. I never even thought of checking them now - that's a good idea!

My husband keeps teasing me that they will never hatch because I spend too much time staring at them! I think you're right about them scaring us! Their mommy is quite the stubborn one - she does everything her own way. Her babies must have inherited her obstinate personality! I will certainly have my hands full with 20 little ones like her!

Thanks again!

Make sure not keep them all together, so they can't eat each others tail and feet off

Thanks - I think I have that covered. I have 6 rubbermaid containers (17 gallons each) set up with uv and basking lights and I have 4 smaller containers on hand in case I need to separate them further. I figured 4 per bin would be ok.

Thanks for the advice though! If I would have sprung for more incubators, I'd probably have babies instead of eggs right now!

I agree with the other posts... 79 days is long, but I have found that at 82.4 Deg mine hatched at 77 days... 84.9 degrees they hatched at 69 days... I have tested various temps from 82 to 86. I recommend 84 as the babies seem to be strong.
