beachbeardies Jun 12, 2006 09:38 PM

ok i have pretty much thought up how im going to build my cages, with some help from BigHurt. thanks man. im using melamine board, dado cutting for jointing together, wood glue and nail gun it together. or is a screw gun better???

now i need to find whats the best to use for the doors, i was thinking of using 1/4 inch thick acrylic. a huge sheet big enough for 3 cages 3ft long x 2ft tall is 72 bucks at home depot. if there is something better to use and/or cheaper please let me know. no one replied on my last message =(

thanks

I perfer glass, its cheaper resists discoloration warping and scratches. I use safety glass its laminated 1/8 glass designed not to shatter. Its a little less than 1/4 still works with the track I have.

I use/recommend elmers probond wood glue its designed for moisture enviroments and works great. Also are you useing a pneumatic nailer? If not you probally should go with a screwed joint they hold/clamp better than hand driven nails.

i was thinking about actually using a screw gun or just a normal electric screw driver. seems that will hold up better than nails. what do you think?

about the glass...i plan on doing a flip down door instead of sliding double doors, would safety glass got for this???

I use my Dewalt and square drive drywall/muiltipurpose screws for nearly everything I build so I don't see a problem there. There are screws designed for melamine however, I don't know what they are.

I hate drop down doors for your application. I am really bias to sliding bypass doors, so I will refrain from comment. However, I do believe the safety glass will work, for further info see your local glass supplier. They really know there stuff, at least here, not quite sure about Virgina.

Good Luck
