odd behaviour

snailqueen87 Jun 13, 2006 10:02 AM

I was watching my snake last night when he was in his hyper stage and he kept burrowing his head into the substrate, taking it out and then doing it again. As well as this it looked like he was rubbing his head on some wood in his tank.
He shed almost a week ago and there were no bits left on him and I could see no external parasites.
Could there be another more sinister reason other than having an itchy head?

I'm not sure why yours is doing this, but I have seen this and many other odd behaviors. I had a retic years ago that had a facination with one water bowl. He would stare at it all day. I saw a king snake that repeatedly bite his tail and attempt to constrict himself.

For your's I guess just an urge to borrow. If the inside of his mouth is clean, and you don't see anything outside, maybe just add some substrate to see if he just wants to bury and hide.

Good luck

Is your snake an adult male? Some of my males are still in "breeding mode," which means they are restless and looking for ways to escape and find females.

I don't actually know 'his' sex (I just latched onto he when I got him). He's a year and a half old, does that count as adult yet?
I've seen him bury himself several times before but that was when the weather was colder as insulation, it was just the fact that he kept almost rubbing his head.

Deuce is always doing stuff like that. We usually call it "sand worm phase" when he starts digging. He has an undertank hot pad, so I think that sometimes he just like the feel of the warm substrate... he's a texture junkie!

In May he shed, and then I found him crawling back into the skin! He's a funny guy!
