brooksi phase of floridana parade...

daveb Jun 13, 2006 12:34 PM

a couple of hypos. i love this phase, it has been around as long or longer than any other brooks recessive trait, and was the first morph i acquired when the love's were still breeding kings.

the first pic is my male, he had a wonderful spring with the girls. he is from the love line bred to a very yellow female i got from howie sherman (beard line). at the time i acquired him it appeared that he held more orange compared to the other animals they produced. not too many people favor the aberrant pattern but i like his. I've always hoped that i would be able to extend that stripe down the back of his offspring but not so far.

the girl is from tom agosta, i picked her up at the NY metro expo a few years ago. she surprised me with a clutch of eggs this year. i had introduced her to a whiteside male but she was always in a fighting mood and never seemed to get things done. if that is her preference, so be it.

more to come

a couple (2 out of 3)of 2002 offspring from brandon o's big white female. i believe he bred her to an axanthic male, so the trio i have are hets. i need to get better pics of these, i don't currently have yard space ( and too many pesky neighbors) to go out and do natural light photos.
the male successfully bred both females this year, resulting in about 25 eggs. i am curious what the white x white breeding will produce. i believe the phenotype is a wild trait but there is still some degree of variability. the male also bred to a hypo female (the busiest guy in the shop), i plan to hold back a few and see the influence of each trait in the next generation.

a couple of the extreme orange lavender albino BPOF.
I had a big pair of these in 1998, some of the brightest orange i had seen at that point, but the dummy i was, i sold them. i still remember who i sold them to, hahaha...
paul- if you're out there, i DID get this pair to breed this year. thank you.
the female (middle picture) definitely has the better color of the pair, but also has the worst attitude. the male really just wants to hang out...

i did not push the pile of aspen in front of the cloacae of the mating pair (last pic). that is just as it was when i took the pic. must be a modest pair.

I produced this ghost female in 2000 and still have her. She came from a pair of really awesome double hets, the DH female was one of the best brooksi i have ever seen of any phase, period.
it was so exciting to produce a ghost and i was mailing pictures all over the place, acting like a fool...
i kept several pairs of double hets for ghost for quite a while and actually kept track of the ratio of phenotypes produced (normal/hypo/axanthic/ghost), to see if the "1 out of 16" principle worked. for a short period there were more ghosts than expected but gradually it was very close in the end.
people often ask what's the difference between ghosts and axanthics? well, side by side i haven't seen an axanthic beat out a ghost' appearance except for one or two new england axanthics. as hatchlings there is no comparison, but a few axanthics do catch up as adults. i say work with what you love and plan your genetics appropriately if you plan on doing some breeding projects...

This guy is straightforward wild type brooksi, no hypo, or anything else. just a big old wrecking ball, 62" and 1.2kg. he is ten years old this year, happy birthday big guy.

whitesides...
i am not a professional geneticist hahaha, but i find it fun to do the punnett squares and see what frequencies are expected with crosses, and then see if it pans out. so far it always does with brooksi traits.

every one of these bred this year but won't produce any whitesides. they were all put with other moprhs to create hets for ws snow, ws ghost, ws hypo, ws albino. i will have to put each group of hets labelled in different racks on opposite walls so they do not get mixed together...

whiteside male (top)
axanthic whiteside w/ snow female this spring (middle)
an old pic of a whiteside female (bottom). i like how dark she is on top for some reason.

i agree, Tom has some nice animals. i'm going to stop by his table at the next show, see what he's hatched so far.

i have one sulfur, but didn't get around to posting it.

Great stuff Dave. I really look forward to seeing what you produce this season. This forum will be moving a lot faster in July when we all start seeing lots of babies. I really can't wait! Tom Stevens

Nice animals Dave. Any chance, while you were taking photos, you took any of a few of your '05's?
