TIMES-STANDARD (Eureka, California) 10 June 06 Tortoise has a name, needs a home
Cecil the escaped tortoise is looking for a new home.
A woman who's owned the 20-pound African spurred tortoise for five years, recognized her pet after his photograph ran in local papers on Friday and contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff's Animal Shelter. He's been staying there since Thursday after being found in a back yard near the Arcata Marsh.
Cecil's owner said he got away, but she would like to place him with the shelter in hopes of finding a new home.
The reptile is native to sub-Saharan Africa. When fully grown, it may weigh between 140 and 200 pounds. When well cared for, they can live for over 100 years. They need access to natural sunlight and shade, and while at the shelter it will eat grass hay, flowers and grasses in the yard, and some vegetables.
