FBT Tadpole Pics & Questions

MissMiniZoo Jun 14, 2006 12:45 AM

Attached are two pictures of the newly hatched tadpoles...

I'm so nervous about raising these tads. This is the first time I've gotten tadpoles from my group of toads. I've read all I could find on the internet. I plan on transferring the tads to a 10 gallon which I have divided in half. I am planning on using a small filter for the water. I have bought freeze dried daphnia (hikari brand) and Veggie Round with Spirulina algae, kelp, salmon, halibut, etc.) the brand is Omega One. I also have tropical fish flakes. I will keep the bunch of java moss in with the tads for hiding, etc. Are there any other suggestions as to how to raise these guys to give them the best chance of survival?

Thanks in advance for all suggestions!

Yes, transfer them to a 10 gal. aquarium soon.

You got the food dead on, I mainly did the algea at first, then frog and toad bites later on. With any new aquarium set up, you have to seriously watch the NH3 (ammonia) levels. New aquariums tend to be unstable while the balance of bacteria is forming.

So just do water changes at least twice a week. A filter is a great idea, but it won't solve your ammonia problems. Don't over feed, you're better off under feeding.

I raised about 75 FBT tadpoles this year, and only had 4 deaths from tadpole to 2.5 month old baby toads. The deaths were my fault also.

Good luck!

Wow, 75 tadpoles...I probably have about 35-40-ish. They are now in a 10 gallon with java moss and filter with aeration. I also use a turkey baster to siphon out uneaten food. I also replace some water about every 2 days. All have lived so far. I think I mentioned that this was my toads' first clutch. I've heard that younger females tend to lay far fewer eggs than older females. Do you find that to be true? There were more eggs in their tank the other day, but I chose to leave them there. I really don't have room for more tadpoles. What do you do with your toadlets once their fully grown? Do you sell them, give them away??

Thanks for the reply...looking forward to hearing more about your tadpoles...
