uvb light vs supplements

spentchange Jun 14, 2006 04:41 PM

if the only reason you need to give your reptile uv-b light is for vitamin D3, than "theorectically" i could skip that and use a UV-A light and supplements. i think that would be fine but let me know if i am missing something because i want him to live as long as possible. thanks

i am also in new mexico so it is real warm and i am trying to convince my CWD to go outside with me and get some sun. he can get right out of his leash at the drop of a dime and he is a runnin machine so i am trying to gain more of his trust and then maybe we can go for a stroll in the park.

I dont nessecarily like the supplement over UVB method, but if you do take him outside, or give him some unfiltered sunlight and use some supplements, he can go like that. Instead of using a leash, you may want to just build him a cage for outside. Or, if he is big enough, if you have some sort of rabbit hutch, or other wire cage, that will suffice as well. What type of harness/leash combo do you have? Is it one made for reptiles? I think that the ferret harnesses work better and seem more comfortable. You can always make one from shoelaces also. If you do let him in a cage outside, make sure its half under shade so that he can escape any excessive heat.

i have tried shoelaces and making a custom harness out of soft cloth. he is able to slip out of both due to my lack of forcefullness. i have a hard time with holding him to tight. well to be honest i can even bring my self to close my hand around him at all. well any ways thanks for responding. my wife wont let me spend anymore money on my animals so i was afraid that the uvb light was necessary.
