Newbie question about blood types etc.

santoury Jun 14, 2006 06:30 PM

I have kept examples of just about every group of snakes available, and currently have a great collection of ball pythons.

I am looking to get into blood pythons now, but am a bit confused about all the different variations and names out there.

Could somebody kindly clear up this mess: Red? Black? Chrome Head? Malaysian Red? And so on. Which are curtus? Which are britt...? Are they mixed up/hybridized at this point?
Also - are there any TRUE morphs, other than the albino? I hear about patternless and tiger, etc, but are they really morphs, or just a group of unusually marked animals floating around?

At what age / weight do these start breeding? (male and female)

What are reasonable adult prices? I have seen quite a range, no matter what the size or color is.

What is the usual blood clutch size?

Thanks for everything

Red? - malaysian or sumutran Bloods, or brongs

Black? - python curtus, or also know as sumutran short tailed pythons or black bloods. there are two races (or variations), still the same speicies

Chrome Head - varition of head color bloods or blacks, usually referred to with blacks...a lot of people think that the black bloods/sumutran short tails with chrome heads are way more desirable than the yellow heads...

Malaysian - Red see above? And so on.

Which are curtus? - blacks or sumutran short tails

Which are britt - borneo short tails or borneo bloods

Are they mixed up/hybridized at this point? Not at this point, but there are a few hybrids out there

Also - are there any TRUE morphs, other than the albino? I hear about patternless and tiger, etc, but are they really morphs, or just a group of unusually marked animals floating around?

i question the tiger morph...cherry bombs, but i am not sure if that is really a morph, super stripes...

At what age / weight do these start breeding? (male and female)

3 years is my opinion...

What are reasonable adult prices? I have seen quite a range, no matter what the size or color is.

captive bred normals from nice adults (i.e. marters)- $225 and up

albino bloods from nice blood lines - 1500 and up

What is the usual blood clutch size? 10 - 25

Thanks for everything

you are welcome

that will vary; i have an adult female albino blood that i wouldn't sell for less than $6k if she were for sell, she dropped 22 eggs this past season, and it was her first time laying...so bigger things should be to come.

i'd be weary of cheap priced adults...i've been sold females that were males, and i recently drove 1400 miles round trip to kansas to get an adult female that turned out to be a male...which i was not very happy about.

just like anything, sometimes you get a sweet deal, but you usually get what you pay for.

i seen t+ and t- albino,striped,marbeled,matrix(co-dom het for ivory),ivory witch i think looks like a black back type, and best of all the leu.!!i got a very good(grate)deal on mine!!!
i traded lav.albino king and baby redtail worth 125.00.to a man that came to the local expo with what he said a breeder trio.of bloods in his pellow case.they where not but maybe a good year or two.the bigest was the male red blood that has a nice red color .the med.one was a female red blood with the gold tan color.and a very, very thin female black blood being the smalest.he said that they where very mean and would bite him every time he would hold them for, freinds to see.well they ate that night!!!!the black inhaled 3f/t adult mice witch was a small meal.after they all where in good health i found a chrome hheaded bk male (04) for $130.00 cash.i had been looking for some more bloods for about 6 months after i had sold a baby red after having it for about two months. good luck
