New Indigo Cage

ttreptile1 Jun 14, 2006 07:47 PM

Sup everyone! I haven't posted here in quite a while. Good to see some familar faces like Chris Harper. Just wanted to stop in and say hi and post a pic of a cage I just finished.

Its a 4x2x2 Double Stack cage for my juvi Eastern Indigos. Its made of higher grade 1/2" pine plywood, stained slate blue two tone with a white wash style stain and sealed with Polyacrlic. Glass front sliding doors and plastic door tracks.

I am also finishing up a 2 foot external hanging hide box accessible through soon to be drilled access holes that will mount on the right side giving them 6 foot total run space and a dark hide. Let me know what you think.

Like the slate blue wash, very unique finish. Let us know how it holds up and post more pics with the hides/animals. Is it heavy to move? I used to have double units, but I am kinda a loaner and they were to hard to move by myself.

Again Good Job!

The weight is great with the glass out. I can move it alone in small amounts. The wifey helps get it up and down the stairs.

I'm am taking my time with the hides. The indigos are only a little over a year old so 4x2x2 is plenty for now. I will post pics when I am done though. Working on a similar unit for my leucistic southern pine pair as well so thats eating up some time.

Tim,

It's good to "see" you again. Still have the Olive Python cage? Actually, a friend of mine has started putting together a collection of Olive Pythons and wants some cages. Any thing I should consider about Olives specifically before I design a cage? He has both regular and Papuan Olives.

Your cages look good and the finish is unique. I hope the polyacrylic is up to the Indigos.

I sold the Olives a couple months back. I am toning down my collection to just a few keepers. They were awesome snakes though, I miss them alot. They were really mild on the cages. Not hard to clean up after at all. Those cages I made were 6 footers and just painted with bathroom backer board on the bottom. As far as I know the guy that bought the Olives still uses them to date and has no issues.

I am hoping 3 layers of poly will be enough for the Indigos. They are such a mess as you probably know. Any suggestions on further "indigo poop proofing" the cage? Maybe a nice coat of titanium or carbon fiber would stop them, lol.

If it's a problem you could always laminate a layer of self-adhesive vinyl film onto the inside. It's the stuff used in the graphics industry. Impressive stuff and very durable.

I would at least get some scrap vinyl flooring onto the floor if you can get some leftovers from Home Depot or such place. Of course with Indigos they seem to deficate all over the place, not just the floor.
