Question about idea for outside

Linda G Jun 15, 2006 11:19 AM

I am currently looking into expanding Digit's cage and had
an idea but not sure if it would be safe.

He is in a second story bedroom overlooking our back yard.
He loves to sit and watch the wildlife. In addition to
expanding is current habitat I would like to have a special
cage made that attaches to the window outside so he can come
and go as he pleases during warm weather. He would be safe
from animals and other people because it is the 2nd story.
My concern is in the event that the weather would turn chilly
while I'm at work or if he would get too hot(the afternoon sun
beats down pretty good right there) would he know to come inside? I have read and people have told me that igs are not very smart and will stay put until they are to cold to move
or overheated.

I really would like to give him access to the outside but
not at the expense of something terrible happening.

Thanks
Linda

Do any of you utilize this type of set-up? What are your
thoughts both negative and positive on this?

wow He's beautiful. Is there a way you can keep your Iguana looking that green? I've seen some that are more brown/yellow and I want to keep mine as green as possible.

Jenna~age has everything to do with color.

Feeding well is most important & that has some to do with it but mostly age. They all lean toward the greenish brown as they become old farts.

Igglets are always WILD green.

Cute aren't they?!?!?!?

Hope that helps.

Linda~I don't know how to answer that question (about igs being smart/stupid) but from my experience at least I can tell you Forest thermo regulates himself (seeks shade when hot, sun when warm) ALL the time.

I know this isn't your typical setup but Forest has his own "space" under an orange tree in my back yard. There are several perches, Forest's own lawn chair, his own green onion plant to munch as well as access to shade/sun at all times. Face it, he's in the shade as long as he's on a perch under the tree, if he wants sun, he crawls down & lays at the sunny end of his lawn chair. It's always his choice. He's a free roamer outside as much as inside my home.

When Forest gets tired of the sun & he wants his own bed in the AC, that lizard gets off his perch & if I miss his decent, he crawls across the patio & bangs the glass patio door to be let in.

My point is, I'd trust Forest to move when the temp changed. But then again, I see him do it all the time.

I know it's not the best pic but here's a pic of Forest's "space" under the orange tree. His little cousins scurry when they see me carrying out the king lizard in the morning, LOL.

I'd trust him to thermo regulate but I'm no expert.
