Oliver's Abode

chachacha Jun 15, 2006 12:12 PM

Just wanted to show off my Oliver's new Abode. It's gigantic! It's got space for all of his stuff underneath and a piece of plexiglass in the middle to make two enclosures from one! July 1st we are heading up to the Illinois show to try to find Oliver's mate. Getting super excited!
P.S. obviously the cage isn't done - we've still got lots of work to do in the next couple weeks - I'll post some new pics when we have it complete!

wow, that is pretty damn cool. What do you plan to treat the inside of the cage with?

Thanks - I've recently stained the outside and sealed it and I've also used thompson's water seal on the inside to prevent the wood from rotting. It's got laminate tile flooring on the bottom to help keep the wood safe as well as make it easier to clean. It's almost ready - I've just got to let it air out for a couple weeks now!

just a bit of a warning.... from what I've seen/used water 'sealant' for wood only has a residual effect for a couple years usually. Especially if substrate/water will be in direct contact with the wood for a certain period of time, you may want to consider a varnish or lacquer. Varnish usually works better because it soaks in, and can seal the wood for 20-30 years very easily if done properly ( just takes longer to dry). There are a few other options, some of with are quite a bit more expensive. You should post this in the cage building forum, and see what other opinions you get.
It looks GREAT though!
