How to tell between wild-caught and CB?

AttackDonut Jun 15, 2006 12:25 PM

The roughneck I got, I examined him last night.

There is not a mark, or blemish, or wound, or scar, nor tick, nor bite, anywhere on him. His claws and toes are all perfectly arranged, same length, no chips, scratches, full in hips and tail.

Bight eyed, alert and lots of tongue flicking.

Didn't mind being picked up for examination, didn't run away or hiss or display a threat posture when picked up, or set back down.

I assumed he's wild caught, but how can I tell?

By my understanding, the only way you can tell if an animal is captive bred would be by proof! Proof of parents and eggs.
Most anooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo(sorry that was my monitor)Most likely he is wild caught; I heard that many roughnecks have a pretty docile temperament even when they are wild caught. Being loaded with parasites is also a good indication of being wild caught. I have found that many people that don't specify whether wild caught or captive bred are usually selling wild caught animals. Your assumptions are probably correct.

if you don't know IF it is captive bred, it isn't. if you didn't buy it directly from the actual monitor breeder, it is an import : )

No real absolute way to tell, but I noticed this in Blackthroats. My WC had much more protruding scales(Much thicker around the neck)and WC have the wild eye!If you've kept monitors for a while you'll notice even scared monitors have big eyes but wc have wild eyes. They look terrified.Only people who have had both know the look. It's amazing and very noticeable.Fear in the wild kingdom is noticeable even by me.It's FEAR!wild caught adults really show it,not babies.I know fear and terror and my wc's are pure terror.I felt bad for them and try extra hard to gain their trust.Nearly impossible with WC adults.Just my opinion.

If you didnt buy it from Dragoon who used to frequently post here, and posts on another forum, you have WC no doubt. She has been the only captive breeder of this species that I know of period, if otherwise, Id love to see proof, if otherwise it hast happened in many years before her. They would be very expensive as captive bred animals being that there are none so a real breeder could ask almost any reasonable price they wanted and get it to from those serious about getting them.
Oh, and one or sometimes 12 fecals in a row may not show any parasites.
