Trip to Southern California

rkkaufmann Jun 15, 2006 01:10 PM

Hello:

I am an academic who lives on the US east coast and have been invited to the LA region to give a talk on October 5. I have a strong interest in herpetology (I studed at Cornell) and would like to hike and look for snakes and lizards when I visit. I am not a collector, but someone who likes to be outdoors and take photos. This would be my first trip to the LA area (I often got to Southern AZ) and am looking for some information

1) Will snakes and lizards still be active in early October?
2) I am thinking about renting a car and heading east to the mojave. Is this a good idea. If so, where should I go?

Thanks for any help.

Robert

Hi Robert, there are alot of Western Rattle Snakes out that time of year in the foothills of the L.A. area and some of the smaller Coastal Horned Lizards, Alligator Lizards and Side Blotched Lizards. Out in the Desert you might fined A Desert Iguana, Leopard Lizard or Zebratail still out. In the fall most of the Lizards that are still out are the hatchlings
