Possible fungal infection.

Jay W. Jun 15, 2006 10:29 PM

Hello,

I'm seeking any sound advice. I have two CH White Cheek Mud turtles (Kinosternon luecostomum). Both of which have what appears to be some sort of fungal infection. The areas affected are the hind feet and the soft tissue around the hind feet/legs. On one animal, the toes look as though they are missing. The said areas have a "fuzzy" appearance to them, which leads me to believe its fungal. The animals are all eating normally. It shouldn't be a question of water quality, as I keep my tanks extremely clean. Could it be aggression on the other turtles part? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I wish I could provide pics, but I don't have a digicam.

Thanks in advance,
JW

I had a similar problem, minus the missing toe, with my young wood turtles. One wood turtle was constantly biting at the other's rear legs and tail. I never saw the behavior, but I did see the whitish appearance...it looked like fungus. Like you, my tank was immaculate. I took the turtle to a vet, and we did a bacterial and fungal culture...nothing. Finally, I walked in to see the aggressor attached to the victim's rear end. I have separated them. Just in case, I'd still recommend culturing the area. Good luck.

Thank you for the response. I haven't seperated the turtles yet, but will do so this afternoon. I'm still not 100% sure as to the cause of the infection, but they are being medicated. Wish me luck!
