Roaches

ChameleonV123 Jun 15, 2006 10:50 PM

Being from the south, there are a lot of them around here. I thought it was funny that chameleons find them tasty. I keep my crickets on my back porch, and this presents a problem when the roaches eat the cricket food, and crickets. I can easily catch the, but are these "wild" roaches ok, as far as a food item? Usually I grab the nearest shoe to smash them, because they "carry diseases" I have always heard. So should I feed them, or should I play it safe?

I have heard the same things about roaches, that they carry disease. I have also heard that they are some of the cleanest insects...I still wouldn't use them. Buy safe ones.

You could get a colony going from wild caughts.

Put them in one tank, and feed them only lettuce for one week.

Move them to another tank, and feed them lettuce for one week.

Repeat once, and this should cleanse all of their stomachs of any crap they have in their system, and once they start breeding, remove any offspring/egg cases immediately, and only feed offspring and start new colonies from there. This will ensure no parasites get passed on.

Might take a while to get going, but will be well worth it in the end.
