Iguana Food

qtkitty Aug 01, 2003 08:54 AM

im trying to make some of my own of ehat i have heard called V Salads .... please tell me if any of these foods is a no no .. both of the salads have a large quantity of squash and smaller amounts of other ingridients ... along with these i got greens .. romane, mustard greens, parsley, collards, turinup greens.. there are also chemical free clover and dandilion plants in the lawn that im going to pick

Salad 1
Calcuim
beta carotine
thymine ( a ity bitty pinch since im freezing stuff)
Avacodo
Acorn Squash
parsnip
green pepper
green beans

Salad 2
complete vitamin
thymine ( a ity bitty pinch since im freezing stuff)
Mango
kiwi
spegitti squash
sweet potatoe
plantain

so does this sound like a good start to getting to a good well balanced diet ?

i thought i did good at the grocery store today i only spent $20.. and from my calculations the salad part should last both the iguana and boxie 2 months .. because i have three ice trays full for each salad and once cube should feed both of them a day if not more

i think that in like two weeks to a month i will make another one .. i look scotch tape and wrote what was in each salad so i could remember and then i can make another with totally different ingredients ..

im thinking

tunup root
dandilion greens ( since he doesnt seem to keen on them )
some form of alfalfa
blueberries ( since i got some very fresh nummy ones )
ground up kidney beans ( small amount )
yellow squash (we have some fresh from the garden)
calcium

maybe some other nummies i find avaliables

could i add cod liver oil ... i have beta carotene .. since animal isnt digested wel.. what other vitamins should i add .. im only putting small amounts of vitanims in the mix so i can feed it every day with out over dosing

i thought freezing took out most of the nutrients. and romaine doesnt have any nutrients in it.

freezing does take out some nutrients .. thats whay im adding so many added vitamins all the time to each batch expecially thymin or B1 .. because thats one vitamin that really disapears from the veggies .. or so i have read

I would not add cod liver oil, or any fish oil to an iguanas diet

Waaaaiiiit a minute, back the truck up!

Are you only feeding per day what would fit in one compartement of an ice cube tray?! How old are your iguanas? I sure hope they're really really young, because that isn't very much food at all! A full grown iguana should be eating at LEAST two cups of food a day!

Although I don't view feeding frozen foods as the best route to take, that may be your only option in feeding your guys, so the added vitamins and thymine is a good thing.

As for your greens, feed as many collards, mustards, turpip, and dandilion as you can, they are all excellent choices (feed a variety though, with collards as your staple). Clover (as long as you are POSITIVE it has come in no contact with any sort of chemical) and parsley are okay on occasion, but romaine should be avoided if at all possible, as it has very little to no nutritional value and is comprised primarily of water.

You're using acorn and spaghetti squashes in your salads, and both of which are good, but do try to use butternut as much as possible, as well as buttercup, kabocha, and other orange fleshed squashes that are available to you.

Parsnip, green pepper, sweet potato, and green beans are all acceptable vegetables to feed your iguanas. Other good vegetables are: snow peas, snap peas, okra, asparagus, cactus leaves, nasturtiums, cassava etc.

I'd steer clear of the kiwi, the seeds are very difficult to remove, and if left in are very difficult for the iguana to digest. Papaya and mango are great fruits to feed, mine LOVES her mango!

Check out http://www.greenigsociety.org/foodchart.htm and http://www.geocities.com/ig_chick/nutrition.html for some really good nutritional information.

You're on the right track!

I'd rethink the feeding frozen foods though, it provides less nutrition and is less appetizing to the animals.

Good luck with your iguanas, and stick around the board, it's a great place to get help!!

Wendy

I must say your iguana is gorgious ...

*lol* our single iguana is only 12 inches long including the tail .. and his tail is about 8 inches .. but i also have a box turtle which can eat most of the same things ( but she only needs a tablespoon of veggie food every other day and then gets greens and protien as well ) ... thats a reason i have to freeze it .. i cant keep the food fresh long enough to give him good variety .. and any veggies around the house gets eatten by the three girls in the house hold .. so mixing it together is a good thing

and because im freezing it i know it takes vitamins out but thats why im adding vitamins to it

if romain is mostly water can it be used to supliment their water intake? .. as long as they are fed it in small amounts .. im only feeding a small amount of that and then lots of other greens

I know i only have two types of squash used so far .. but i have only made two salads .. i plan on each one using different items then going back and making a smiliar salad as it disapears or i run out of different foods at the grocery store .. with freezing the foods i can offer this little guy more variety and change out tastes more often so he will not get "bored" i have been reading Iguanas for Dummies .. *lol* Yes im a Dummie ..and it says they can get bored with nothing to do or new things ... so im trying to keep the little guy active and energized and interested .. with different foods, swims , hand walks , ( no free roaming yet .. but we are thinking of iguana proofing a bath room and letting him loose in there for small amounts of time to look around and run and climb around .. ), and they need things to watch and smell ect........

he he i pulled a trick with the kiwi i pealed off the skin and then cut off the out side pulp out side of the seeds and then cut off the seeds into another container and used the middle .. so i didint put any seeds in .. i actually ate them .. i LOVE kiwis .. i only put in one kiwi like that so it wasnt to much

our iguana seems to like the frozen veggies the one with peppers and parsnips he ate a table spoon worth today and two different leaves collard and turnip greens .. Ohhh and a fresh blueberry .. which after one lick he gobbled down ...Needless to say his little tummy looks like hes a stuffed sausage .. i really hope they cant get fat Geeze .. i dont think hes used to getting good food ...

THANK YOU !!! For the food lists .. thats the hardest part is finding out what all they can eat .. because the grocery stre has some things that arent on the lists that i have seen so far
