my blotchie eggs, hatching - then what?

lele Jun 16, 2006 11:02 AM

Hi All,

I don't post here often because I have side-blotched lizards, no chucks. But Eve had invited me over from the cham forum and I posted about them once before.

Stan and Ana produced a clutch of 4 back in May and I lost them all - they didn't come out looking too good in the first place. Actually I do not know who the Dad was (:-O b/c I just got them in April and they were not together at time.

Well, on May 29 she laid 5 more and they are plump and rosy, though one seems to have a slight indent along one side. I am hoping it is nothing to worry about and they all hatch OK. I understand that they can incubate from 40-60 days so it looks like I still have several weeks to go, which also give me time to gather more info.

I have never done any eggs before (except for Lepidoptera and they are a whole different story! lol!) so as excited I am about having these I realize I am not quite sure what to do once they are here! Once they hatch, do I offer them food right away? FF & pinheads OK? What sort of a setup should I have prepared for them and when are they old enough to go to a new home? I will probably be keeping 3 or 4 , but I have one friend who might be interested in one or two.

Any tips, experience, hatchling care sheets, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,
lele

these pics were taken right after being laid and do not show the indent. Will post one later.

bugs on hand for them to eat! LOL. I imagine that UVB will be real important to have these guys survive.

:0) Hahhaaa

Hi lele The kids when hatched usually do not eat for the first few days, they are good from the yolk sac they have absorbed. Then you could offer tiny crickets I use pinheads or a tiny bit bigger than pinheads and increase the size as they grow.

Subtrate should be paper towels until about a couple months old atleast, that way ya don't have to worry about impaction.

Set up is usually just like the parents as far as temps, just make sure nothing can fall on them , rocks, anything heavy. They like to hide so always provide some little caves or something they can get under safely. For hatchlings I always

use a very very shallow (yogart type plastic lid for water) it is so low they can walk/run through it and learn to drink, I have never had any grow up and not be able to drink from bowls. Once they learn to lick the water from the shallow lid, ya got it made. :0)

And as far as how old before you can home them, I usually send my hatcling collareds NO younger than 8 weeks.
And thats if someone really wants them at that age otherwise I hang on to them a few more weeks. That way they are pretty well started.

They should be fine, hope they all make it, should be very cute, and it's always so exciting watching them hatch.

I just had a baby green anole hatch out.

With tiny baby lizards, you MUST be careful about overheating. They heat up so much faster because of their surface area:body volume ratio than adults. I once lost some baby lizards due to overheating, so I'm passing this hard-won knowledge on to you.

For little tiny baby lizards, I just use a UVB fluor bulb. If you feel you really need basking light, make sure it's a very low wattage bulb, like 25 watts, and that's for at least a 10 gallon tank, not for one of those little plastic terraria. Wingless fruit flies are ideal food for them, as are new-hatched crickets. You can order a "Tube of Crickets" from FlukerFarms.com for $5.00, which includes shipping. They say there's like 50 in there, but there's usually more. In hot weather, many crickets shipped die, however. I go to my local pet shop, like I did tonight, and hand pick out the tiniest crickets from their bin. The help think I'm nuts, but tuff. My baby anole needs to eat! I took her to school (I'm a science teacher) this week, and the kids (and faculty) went nuts over my 1" cutie.

I keep side blotches--utas--(2 females) in with my Texas banded geckos. The utas are the "day shift" and the Tex gex are the "night shift". So, no one gets in anyone else's way and they are totally peaceful together. If you run across a MALE uta, he'd have a very good home with me.

Have you heard from our southwest buddy who is swift with the noose and hands? LOL. I tried to call Ian the other day and just got his voice mail.

I hope all is well with you, Esther.

I just set up Ana's laying tank again b/c I believe more are on the way! I understand this goes on until about August, I wonder if I began to lower temps now if I could slow her down a bit?

thanks, yeah I know that (now) from Luna but these guys are strictly free rangers and Stan seems to often igve in to her eating first - what a guy! She just popped her skin yesterday as girth expands. I catch small moths at the light and mealowmrs. They do not seem to intersted in crickets. Also, they seem to eat close to bedtime (I guess they knwo what they are doing. They also don;t really "forage." Different from all the rest...

I put her in her tank today but she was just jumping up on the screen (never does that when she is in with Stan) so I decided I'd put her back in with him - he went to bed an hour ago! 6:00! I think he misses her when she isn't there Anyway, as soon as I put her in she buried herself so I will see how she is acting tomorrow. The digging in her dry sand in the middle of the day has been the sign for me that she is close.

It was in the 90's here today UGH - probably not much different from NJ - and I even turned their basking light off mid day because they were both hiding - it was 90 in the tank with only UVB light.

Do your collareds (sp?) free range their food?

John, I'm just chomping at the bit for school to be over. Not til June 28!

I've tried to call Ian several times also and just gotten his voice mail. He hadn't returned my email either of a week or so ago. I know he frequently is not at home, having to spend lots of time at the field research station for his research. And yes, I'm really hoping to team up again this summer for some herpin'.

BTW, anyone hear from Reptilist? I've emailed Terry Johnson a couple of times and it's just not like him not to return an email. I hope everything is well with him. Was kind of hoping to hook up with him again this summer as well, for some Chiris action.
