Getting started with Basilisk~

rlpc117 Jun 16, 2006 01:59 PM

Hi guys, I'm really interested in getting a basilisk, I've did some research but wanna hear more advice, from some actual owners. So, what is the big difference between green one and brown one? I've read that the size are about the same, the only thing i notice is the brown one doesn't seem to look as exotic as the green ones, but I kinda like the brown color...~ how about caring for the two? and what i have to buy together with the basilisk in order to get started? not the common stuff coz i already have some lizards so i have a lot of lighting and heating stuff. is there any special stuff i have to look for when i get a basiliak? like sth that only they need but not others?

All basilisk species require similar care, which includes a large vivarium with high humidity, lots of cover, and a water area large enough for swimming. Hatchlings/small juveniles need at least a 75g or so with a basking area, UVB, and preferably live plants. Adults require a very spacious enclosure with plenty of climbing space. They are very skittish lizards that don't tolerate much handling and should be mainly display. The majority of green basilisks are captive hatched so they will be more apt to adjut to captivity. On the browns, at least 95% are wild caught and can have tricky to establish. I would obtain those as young as possibly, like hatcling size. Those seems to adjust easier. I hope this helps.
