In my opinion they are to small to probe as hatchlings. Most males will be a bit wider at the base of the tail but you really can’t count on that and the tails are not a good indicator either. The only way I find that it can be done with any degree of accuracy is to wait until they are at least a few weeks old or longer and pop them, still not a easy thing to do with such a small snake and should only be done by someone with lots of experience at doing so. But I would love to hear what others think! Thanks.

I have a set of micro probes that i picked up a few years ago, i wait till they are 6-8 weeks old then probe them.

Jim, IMO you are fully correct, even poping at a young age is tough. Neonate Tri-colored hognose sexing has really challenged me.....nothing like nasicus nasicus or other colubrids, good advise!

Not like nasicus nasicus???
i would have said that 18 months ago, but last year i sold a pair of het albinos to a guy in the uk, hes on this board, a year on he came to me and said hey...2 males whats going on??, only more politely than that. i kept photos of the snakes and thier tails and would you believe there was an inch difference in the tails and they were both males!!!!Luckily i had a nice kept back female to give him.
I have also kept back 6 or so from last year, several males to back mine up, turned out female, so i am even a little bervous with nasicus now!!!!.
I'll post a piccy of the micro probes im using, i have never personally had a problem using them.
