I have ...a plan

Shaky Jun 16, 2006 03:02 PM

Let's say that all herpers could identify themselves to border patrol without being stopped. Would they still pull you over if they knew what you were up to?
It seems so easy. This year, herping cars have a white bandanna tied to the antenna. Next year, a diffent ID - reflectors mounted on the front and back bumpers, and so on.
If all herpers agreed to do the same thing with the vehicles, BP would really have no reason to pull you, once they caught on.
Eventually, those who truck in illegals might try to follow suit, but if the symbols changed fast enough (yearly), who's to say it wouldn't work?

Is it really that big of a deal??? It is a pain in the ass, yes,..... but hey, ...........as long as it does not get chronic. I usally have good experiences with border patrol (only 2 bad ones, one down South and one in Brackettville), other than that I enjoy bullshi***** with them.

Good point, Wayne. I have no idea if it's that big a deal as it's never been a problem for me.

Bob, I have always heard you are a character. I missed meeting you at Dave Doherty's table in Daytona last year (I believe). Maybe I'll meet you out West this year. If not, see you in Daytona you crazy Yankee!!!

I did my time with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. We smoked our weed in the rear, NEVER on ANY LZ!!!! Doing dope in the field was a taboo that was dealt with extremely harsh. Glad I wasn't in your unit.

And that's cool by me. I don't go to this forum all that often & don't know the "cast of characters", so to speak. I knee-jerked at the thought of combat assaulting an LZ with anyone in my squad being anything less than straight & high on adrenaline. To quote ya, enough said. Peace to all herpers.

ARREDONDO!!!! Decided to walk on the wild side huh??? Welcome. I think you will find this forum to be more enjoyable as well as exciting compared to the Morelia forum. And what a cast of characters there are!!! Enjoy.

Yeah man! I followed you here 'cause I wanted to hear of your road rides out west. Seriously. That must be so damn fun to night ride a desert road. Generally, I'm on the Uro forum but, that's kinda tame. Not many tales of folks catching their Uros in the wild. Just the usual mundane husbandry issues. The grey-banded forum looks a bit more lively & while there's no room in this man's collection for another species, I'm sure to enjoy the chatter & you can always count on me to shoot from the hip any chance I get.

RIGHT ON!!!! This is a wild bunch here boy! Hope you can keep up!!

whenever I pass through a Border Patrol checkpoint (going either way) I usually just stop and tell them I'll be snake hunting in your area. Like when driving south towards the Xmas or Black Gap, I stop and tell the BP I'll be snake hunting and where I'll be. I've even pulled over to tell BP officers that were parked or driving slow in an area what I was doing - and I don't recall ever getting stopped after I've done so.

Last year, it got to where the Alpine checkpoint was just waving me through once they recognized my car.

Always doing things the easy and logical way, what is the fun in that. I want a better mousetrap type of thing.

We can have it so that you pull a string in the car that is attached to a sleeping cat’s tail. The cat jumps up and knocks over a stool with a bowling ball on it that runs down a ramp into balance scale that lifts up a knife that cuts a rope that drops a anvil squeezes the air out of a bellow that blows a whistle that lets everybody know we are hunting snakes.

This I can work with.

As does Troy I've always let them know what I'm doing in the area. They have asked me on occasion not to spotlight south of the BP station on 277 as it might confuse people coming up and might cause miscreants to turn around.

It has been a plus on occasions. Several times I've been hunting out-of-the-way roads in S. TX and the BP will see me and notify others in the BP in the area who are into herps and then we get a conversation going. These guys see a lot of stuff we never will and can be useful for information.

BillMcgElaphe Jun 18, 2006 07:00 AM

I always stop and alert the BP at the station or when I see one immobile on the road I'm hunting.
Last fall, the folks at the BP station south of Alpine even hung on to a hatchling Bairds to show me on my swing back through to the hotel in Alpine!!!!

south of alpine but didn't keep us from being stopped on RR numerous times and I guess because the BP came from Presidio ? Okay.............one stop was a grace from heaven one time when we alerted the stationary facility south of Alpine to what we were up to and to be driving back and forth from the big hill south of alpine to the rest areas on 118. After several trips back and forth we decided just to break from boredom we would stop and talk for a bit to the 3 on duty BP agents, We no sooner left to head up to the big hill again and BAM ! A celaenops tooling across the roadway about a half mile from the check point.

that I have wanted to ask before............I have found 2 celeanops of the proximity. I was wondering if any body else has ever found them there which is like I said, approximately 1/2 mile north of check point and about 1 mile south of there ? While the other 3 has been farther down between cuts found in area and 1 off of the Gap at the first cuts and 1 one RR. But let's remember this is 7 in about 30 years. LOL !

That's interesting that you found celaenops right there.
The few I've found were between BS road and Ft. Davis.
