Snow southern pine

doei10 Jun 16, 2006 03:27 PM

Hello, I was always under the impression that a snow southern pine snake was a pink eyed chalky white snake with faint pink to lavender blotching as adults produced from breeding snakes that are double het for almel x anery. I just purchased a snake from what I considered a reputable breeder (dealer}. The snake is a dirty white colored snake with pinkish shading. The snake has dark eyes with black pupils. I originaly questioned the authenticity of this snake as a snow in which the breeder assured me it was. Now that I recieved the snake , which is clearly not a snow( I think it is a luesistic?} I have asked for a refund. The breeder has refused to refund my money claiming that this snake is the original snow southern pine produced by crossing luesistic x amel(which I thought would produced a pink eyed luesistic} Please post your opinions and any pics or documentation to help resolve my situation

I would be mad too. You know there's a lot of variation in Southern morphs. I see the same snakes being labeled as a few different things. Baby Snows that I have seen are white with almost a bluish tint to the faded saddles. I would imagine pink eyes are a must. Anything else would be luecistic. I have seen bright white Snows,,,adults seem patternless....and low luster Leucistics....that barely look like a morph. Patternless with Yellow, red or pink tones.....and even some that seem two tone almost trying to be a stripe. Leucistic X albino does not make Snow in my book. Amel X Anery.....just like with any other snakes. I think there may be a lot left to discover in Pine morphs....and I would not be surprised if over the next few years some of these variants are solidified into definitive descriptions that will be "is or is not" as they should be instead of label after label of them appearing with people calling them as they see fit. This is just an opinion....I do not own any Snows, but I do look at every ad I can find and see many variants......and also get discouraged with pricing that is also all over the place....usually being a bit high. ....where ARE the anery southerns?? I never see any.
I'm like you amel + anery = snow.
Again, I have to wonder if there's really any improvement over this one a friend found recently.....

Mark, gotta comment again...that pic and that snake is mind blowing! I honestly believe that is by far one of the most beautiful southerns I have ever seen. It does look like a morph....would that be considered anery? A variation of luecistic?

Don't think she'd be considered anything but a truly nice FL pine. I hope to find one myself that looks somewhere NEAR that one!
I do have a pair of amels however. Here's an older pic of one.

"Where are the anery Southerns?"

I have wondered the same thing, but then I thought, would you even notice one? Since many are grayish colored anyway, I don't know that a homo anery would really stand out as such. It still seems like you would see them offered as such, though. I'm not really sure who produced the first snow Southern, but I'd like to know.

Shaun, I got my snow southern pictured in my first post from Reptile Industries/Mark Bell. I have heard that he was the first to produce them, whether or not that is true I have no idea.
I think mine is a true snow though, according to what I have seen snows look like. Gregg Feaster has a pair that is identical to mine as well.

Take care!

I agree the awesome pine mark posted a pic of is just a light clean patterned normal pine, something I've spent a half a lifetime searching for.... but I'am confused by what you are calling "amel" I always thought amel ment lacking black pigment, like a corn without a black ring around patchmarks and no black checkers on the belly? no? and an albino (pink eyes) has a pattern visible but a snow is an albino without pattern or just very fant pattern, leucistic is not an albino but just lacks color, and then the patternless is just about a normal with indefinate patterns...JB

Ya know if we searched the archives we'd find a post I did about Anery Southerns,.,,,,,,,as someone had some incredible Snows on the classifieds last year. I honestly can not remember what the verdict was,....and seeing I just got home from vacation I have too much too catch up on before I look into it. I do have one friend to ask.......and I will see if he will post what he knows. And man that pic just blows me away,. that is one incredible snake Tom Stevens

Theres alot of people selling so called snow pines and there just plain leucistic. The snows should have faint purple, lavenderish bothces even as babies and I think red eyes too. John Cherry had some smoking snow pines a couple of years ago. Maybe he could post a pic of one or look on his website. It kind of sucks nowdays because people are breeding freekin hybrids, ratsnakes crossed with northern pinesnakes, jungle corns, and who knows what else. I hate hybrids!!! If I offended anyone by that statement...well good!!! Kevin
