gracie's autopsy results

jeune18 Jun 16, 2006 07:51 PM

gracie died from some word that sounded like myopic but was the mineralization of her body parts. her heart muscles and smooth muscles were mineralized. there were no signs of infection. the said it can be caused by her phos/calcium levels being off or by too much D3. normally i never used D3 but the only calcium i could get in WV had D3 in it. i give wax worms and crickets to my guys. when i moved here i switched calciums back to plain calcium. gracie never showed signs of being sick until she up and died, well and a few days before that. still waiting on the autopsy for stew. if it comes back as this mineraliztion thing then she said we might have to revamp my set ups but i really don't think stew could have that because i gave the uros calcium less than the collareds. so far it just seems that all these illnesses are a coincidence

I started using the Reptocal with the D-3 supplement, thought it has better. I think I'm going back to the Sticky Tongue that is not D-3 supplemented. Thanks for the info. and I hope you get over your loss soon.

the indoor suppliment does contain D3 But there is the other for outdoor and that does not. Apparently you were using the one for outdoor animals.

I had some calcium problems while using sticky tonuge for years and wanted to switch a while to see if there were changes, I started using Rep-cal with D3 also.
If your animals do not get out in the natural sunlight as much as needed, to absorb the calcium they are are getting, than you have to have the D3 (that is the thing that aids in absorbtion.

So I should stay with Rep-Cal with the D-3? I use the Rep-Cal twice a week and the Nature-Zone Worm Guard twice a week on my gut loaded crickets, the rest of the days they're plane. In your experience is this good?

Thanks
Cecil

Cecil, if your collareds do not get out in natural sunlight than ya have to use a suppliment with D3 With adults they say 2-3 times a week is sufficient.
Youngsters get their bugs dusted daily, and I pretty much do that with gravid females also.

As fas as the worm guard I have never used it or even read about it so don' know. You know more about it than I do

I tend to think alot of lizards have different needs. I have begun to take that into consideration, and have started to try some new approaches to suppliments.
I was not totally satified with just sticky tongue , over the past few years I had some problems with females twitching even after using the proper way, feeding my bugs WELL, and having good lighting.

Had a male come out of brumation that seemed funny in the back legs. I have lots of females and older collareds , as well as youngsters , and soon hatchlings so everyone needs something different. And I did not think Sticky tongue with D3 (alone) was cutting it. Maybe when ya use the same thing for so long it loses it's PUNCH on the animal. ????

I purchased all new uvb's ( a small fortune) LOL and finally got a uvb meter and will monitor them. I switched to rep-cal with D3 and am also trying something else I will let ya know how that goes.

All comes down to theres nothing as good as natural sunlight.

The one I use is made by Nature Zone, It is a natural dietary supplement that is supose to control intestinal parasites and increase appatite. If it works or not I'm not sure, I haven't had any problems with parasites in any of my wild cought lizards, I guess the only way to know for sure is to stop useing it and see if I have any probems

Last year I switched to the ZooMed PowerSun U-V lights, you're right it was a bundle of ca$h, I found out the hard way, the local pet shops in my area sell them for around $80ea. then I found this web-site and its sponsers like LLLReptiles and Reptile Depot they sell them for $39. still a lot but not as bad.

My Green Iguana (Igor) has an indoor and an outdoor incloser maybe I should make something for the rest of my guys to go out side

well i had never used d3 before in my calcium before, but don't the uvb lights help them make the d3? in san diego they got more sunshine than they have recently. maybe her calcium/phos ratios were off and it wasn't the d3. i guess i will never know but i will just go back to what i was using before because i never overmineralized someone that way or maybe use a calcium with d3 every two weeks or something
